Depo Shot

Just curious what people's experience with the shot are?
I don't do well on birth control, I get depressed and my sex drive goes away. I definitely don't want another baby right away so my husband and I want to do something along with condoms.
Are the hormones in the shot like the pill?

I was on depo for 7 years after trying all types of the pill, they all didnt agree, either constant bleeding or severe magraines, I thought it was great until I wanted to try for a baby, that took me a very long time to even get my periods back and then to get regular cycles again, then to conceive so I wnt be goin bk on it after I give birth as I do want to eventually try for another child in the future, so il be goin bk on the pill

I was on the pill when I got pregnant with my daughter so obviously that didn't work, I wasn't good at remembering to take it daily. After the birth of my daughter I did the depo shot it worked great but I lost no weight! I kept the baby fat and then some even with working out on a daily basis, when I finally decided it wasnt worth the weight gain and being afraid of needles I decided to try the IUD, I was on that for 8 years with no problems but after a while it started to hurt so I went in and had it taken out and went on the patch only to find out I was allergic to it and had a hard time wearing it until my next check up and now I'm pregnant! Lol I think after this child I will do the implantation in the arm. If you want my opinion try the IUD because it's different for everyone and lasts 5 years.

Depo shot destroyed me. I was a raging b!$%&. It was pointless considering I was always so moody and hormones were crazy that it would cause me to fight with my bf at the time which meant no sex anyway. The pill I would forget so I got on mirena IUD for 5 years, took it out and it took my hubby and I almost a year to conceive after trying. Mirena was the best for my body. No weight gain no crazy hormones and I didn't have to remember to take it. Everyone's different though.

I was depot for a year when me and my husband deployed together. I didn't gain any weight or have mood swings. When I did stop taking it it did take about 2 months for my cycles to get some type of consistency but I also have pcos which could have caused it. Looking into something besides the pill myself since I'm terrible at taking med at the the same time everyday.

I got on the depo shot right after I had my son and it made me gain a ton of weight and made me a crazy b***h!! It was awful! I've tried almost everything, the nuva ring was uncomfortable, the patch kept falling off, the copper IUD was great for 6 yrs then it started to fall out. I will prob b going back on the pill even tho I hate taking it everyday it seems to work best for me. Good luck!!

Jessice0323 i dont think there is a non hormonal pill, if there is i would be really interested. I think she means natural planning. Basically knowing when ur fertile and using condoms.

I loved the depo shot, I was on it for 3yrs and went off after I got married. Not saying it's for everyone but it worked well for me. My sisters don't do well with bc because they say it makes them feel crazy, they didn't do well on the shot. I'm looking into Mirena after delivery. Do some research, we all experience things differently which is why there are so many options out there. Goodluck!

Deposit was horrible for me!!! I gained a ton of weight, had horrible mood swings, and I could not have sex it was too painful to even try. Also, when I came off of it, my period was extremely irregular and it took me over 2yrs to get pregnant b.c I was so irregular and messed up. I agree the Nuva Ring worked best with me!

What is the nueva ring? And I didn't know they have non hormonal birth control pills, how do they work?
I know normal birth control pills don't work for me.

I hated the depo shot!  While on it I bled for a year straight! Talk about birth control! I ended up anemic and had to take iron pills and extra estrogen to even myself out. I had horrible mood swings and would never recommend it.
I found the best for me was the Nuva Ring. It was awesome! 3 weeks in 1 week out insert new ring. I knew exactly when to expect my period and didn't have to remember to take a pill every day.

I personally used non-hormonal birth control methods for the last two years because prior to that I had either been on hormonal birth control or pregnant for over a decade. I felt much better without the hormones. We didn't get pregnant until we wanted to, and trust me we are fertile - out of my six pregnancies we've never actually "tried"... Just decided to stop preventing and got pregnant right aWay, lol. And even with that we were able to make natural family planning + condoms work.

Anything that stops ur menstrual is not good for your body. Its stopping the natural process that a womans body needs every month. Maybe the pill would be a lil bit less drastic of a change for you. Ive tried it but my body coukdnt handle it. Its worth a try, but if all else fails maybe stick to condoms and avoid ur most fertile days. Thats what i do and didnt become pregnant for 3 yrs until i decided to.

I don't want to do an iud, I have known three ppl who had it go through their wall and one person who still got pregnant from having it. I've also heard, since it stops your period, it can cause complications.

@Arizonamom11.. im in Arizona also :) good to see someone in my state. Also to answer ur question, i agree with above statement. I was on depo for a while and didnt like it. Had horrible mood swings and slept ALot. Also after i stopped, i bled for 3 months straight!!!!! it also ruined my sex drive. Wasnt able to get pregnant for 8 months and when i did i found out the shot had given me a Cantaloupe sized cyst on my ovary that i had to get removed after i had my son. If u dont do well on birth control like me, stay as far away from depo as possible. Just my experience, take care.

I gained 45 lbs on it when I had previously not had a problem with weight gain. Never again. I know a few people who have liked it, but more who haven't. Have you considered paragard, the non-hormonal IUD?

Depo messed me up. If you are not planning on kids then maybe ok. It gave me a cyst and talk about ragging hormone trips.  It takes your body a while to go back to normal.
