These are the "non-diagnostic" screens....quad screen, sequential screen, serum integrated screen, cell-free fetal DNA screen. Amniocentesis is diagnostic but has about a 1/300 miscarriage risk. Conditions screened for include Trisomies 21, 18, and 13. Some will give your risk for body wall defects, most common being spina bifida. In time, the cell-free fetal DNA screen should be widely available, meaning available to those under 35. It has the highest sensitivity for the aforementioned Trisomies and it also screens for sex-linked abnormalites like Turners syndrome.

The NT (nuchal translucency) ultrasound is performed between 11 and 14 weeks. I just had mine at 12 weeks. It measures the fluid behind the babies neck. The more fluid the higher the risk for down syndrome but does not always mean they will get down syndrome. This goes hand in hand with a blood test and they compare both to determine your risk level for downs as well as other possible birth defects. If you are hugher risk you can opt to have the test that skittles is talking about where they inject a needle in your amniotic sac to test the amniotic fluid. This is strictly your decision because the test is more accurate but there is a small chance of miscarriage because of it. Im 12 weeks and 5 days today with my first and lost alot of the nerves after my first ultrasound seeing and hearing the heartbeat and baby :) good luck i hope this helps

They didn't do any finger test for me... First they to an anatomy sono gram and if they see something wrong they do follow ups... And then around your 29th week they draw the blood in your arm and test it you find out results on your next appointment... And then if they check blood and see anything wrong I don't know how long later but they take a big needle as like the one for to numb you when you have baby but anyway they take a needle that size and draw amniotic fluid from your belly and that's only with your permission... But it's good due to the fact you wanna know what the deal is with your child...  I know all this cause I ask any questions I can think of an I also had a friend who went through the belly drawing of fluids..

Around 10 to 12 weeks, they'll do an ultrasound on the baby's neck to measure it, and they'll also take blood from your finger, like a blood sugar test. Then around weeks 16 they drawn blood from your arm and compare it to the one from 12 weeks. And then wait for the results.... I remember all this because I told my family I was pregnant after they did the ultrasound at 12 weeks...
