Many people only get two ultrasound scans - one around 11-13 weeks as part of the sequential screen to determine risk factors for birth defects, and one around 18-20 weeks for the anatomy scan to determine any complications due to visible organ anomalies. I got an extra one at 7 weeks due to a significant history of miscarriage, other people may get an early scan to determine embryonic gestational age if they for some reason don't know their LMP date.
Depending on insurance coverage, facility policy, and patient wishes, any or all of these ultrasound scans may be refused. I know several women who never had a single ultrasound and delivered perfectly healthy babies. You don't HAVE to undergo those scans. They're not medically necessary for everyone.

I had mine at 9 weeks. I'm glad I did so I could see the heartbeat. It was re assurance that everything was OK. Before 7 weeks there's a chance you can't see the heartbeat.

They say nothing can be seen before 8 weeks but it's  bull because my sister had one done at 5 or 6 weeks and you could see a sac.
