Is having a midwife, not just an OB/GYN a really common thing in the UK?

I'm I'm the uk I paid for a private scan due to seeing so many people having early scans and losses :-( thankfully everything was ok I saw the midwife last week at 8 weeks and had my bloods and booking in now I don't see her again until I'm 16 weeks but I'm high risk so see the consultant next week at the hospital. My dating scan is on the 5th June feels like forever away xx
