OB won't order the big scan....

The office is always so busy so I asked the nurse AND the receptionist about getting orders for my bio-phys scan (where they measure and check everything). I got two different answers one saying that at my next appt. I'll get the papers to do it. Well by then I'll already be 23wks. So I called the office on Wed. morning and just asked them if they could fax the orders to the hospital and that the hospital booked my appt (yes, I called) for this coming Monday at 1230. They then proceeded to tell me that I won't be getting one and nobody gets them unless something comes back funky on the Quad Screen results... WTH?????? I thought just about every doc. ordered them b/c it was important???? So then I told her about when I was p/g with my son, the scan had picked up on something growing on his brain that wasn't picked up on a reg. u/s. and that I had to go back 6wks later to see if it had resolved (thankfully it had.). They still didn't care!!! I want this scan done!!! Any advice???

Hmmm, both are good ideas lol. Maybe I'll type up the letter and have it handy. I'll go in the office first thing Monday morning (I still kept my appt. at the hospital just in case they order it) and ask to speak with the doc. If they still won't do it then I will give him the letter to sign and date it. Thanks gals!!!

I don't think I'm having that scan...is it the Level 2 u/s or something different?

It's hard to get a doctor to do something that you want when they don't.  I guess what I would do is ask to get an appointment IMMEDIATELY and then have the doctor tell you what the HARM would be in getting the test.  For me, it's worked sometimes because the doctor can't give me a reason NOT to have it.

The only other thing to keep in mind is that insurance might not pay for it if it's not deemed medically necessary.

Good luck!

All I can say is keep making the request.  Were you able to ask the doctor him/herself for the scan?  Maybe physically go to the office to pick up (ie, demand) a requisition?  Or maybe ask for written confirmation from your doctor that you don't need the scan and that you requested it and that they refused it so that if anything happens in the future that you have documentation that your doctor refused the scan (a tad confrontational, but if it gets it done...).  If you were going to go the latter route, I would type up the letter from your doctor's perspective and ask them to sign it.  (eg, I, doctor's name, refused dnikki0928's request for a prenatal anatomic scan on x date when she was x weeks and x days pregnant because, in my opinion, it is an unnecessary procedure.)  Boy, that would get their attention, wouldn't it?
