helping him

Two weeks ago I tested positive for an unplanned pregnancy and am approximately seven weeks along today according to the calendar. When I told my live in boyfriend of 1.5 years, he said, "well I guess we're stuck with each-other forever now." Although I didn't expect him to be thrilled, this comment hurt. He became very short with me over the next couple of days until we finally talked. He said he didn't want to have the baby, but if I did then he would do his best and he hopes his best was enough. I had mixed feelings about his response but at least he was willing to try. Since then he's not very affectionate and doesn't ask me how I'm feeling. He's distant. Lastly, he's mad because we had a Fourth of July party planned that no one can come to and I want to cancel so we can go back to California to announce the new arrival to my family. How can I help him be more positive? Have any of you had the father act this way? Is this normal?

I'm going through something similar. Diana is right and the saying rings true in my experience. We become mommies.... And the dads need time to warm up to the idea. I hope your boyfriend comes around and is the loving support partner in parenting that you need. In the meantime, be happy. Be openly and unapologetically happy. Have a happiness buddy - someone that will ask you how you're feeling and be there for you emotionally. I wish you all the best!

Honestly, it'll probably just take a little time for him to adjust Once you start showing a little or he can feel kicking he will start to bond. Also, as cliche as it is, a woman becomes a mother when she finds out she is pregnant- a man becomes a father when he sees his baby. Having my first really made me believe that (in most cases).
