Ladies that are having boys, or have had boys;

I was wondering if you're getting your sons circumcised? I am, but a little worried about the cleaning after wards, my sister had an awful time with my nephews not getting infected, and she cleaned his religiously. Any thoughts?

I had my first son circumcised and I will have this baby circumcised as well. It was very easy to keep clean, in fact, you aren't really supposed to do much with it at all. I gave him a bath every other day and kept Vaseline on the head at all times. I dont remember how long it took to clean but I know it was a pretty quick process. Babies see the dr. a lot in the first couple weeks so his ped will keep an eye on it as well.

You can just wash them with a washcloth the first week or so can't you? I'm new to this whole thing so I have NO idea! My doctor told me until the cord falls off you can give him a bath once or twice a week, and just wash him with a wash cloth in between. If I use a baby bath, and don't get water on his belly button or his circumcision it shouldn't effect him right??

Also, in those first few days you're not really supposed to use wipes. Keep a thermos of clean warm water by the changing table and some fresh soft towels (burp clothes work well) you should cleanse the penis with that for a while.

Yes my first son is circumcised and this one will be too. As long as you do what the dr tells you it should be fine. My son had no issues at all. Down the road uncircumsiced babies can get lots of infections etc. What do you think you will do?

Yes, sponge baths are the best until the cord falls off, that way the cord dries out and will fall of within a week or two.

AP - I'm getting him circumcised, I can't imagine him NOT having it, and teaching him to clean it later on, I've heard some pretty horrible things about not getting circumcised haha.

Good choice. Now what are your thoughts about the hep b vaccine. I guess some people are beginning a trend not to get their kids vaccinated. I have gotten all my kids vaccinated and plan on doing so with this baby!

AP- I also plan to get the vaccine, I haven't heard anything negative about it, and if it can protect my baby from what I can't, why not!

GRose - I know it, I've heard some pretty gross things about uncircumcised men haha

I have two boys and both were circumcised with no problems.  Just clean it gently with a wet washcloth until the cord falls off and they can have a real bath, and keep Vaseline on it or it will stick to the diaper (Oww!!)

I agree

First son is curcumcised and it is a breeze to clean and one less hassle as far as personal hygiene goes

Second baby (Isaak) will also be circumcised.

All of my friends who have boys did NOT get them circumcised (circumcision is almost unheard of here in Quebec) have to deal with major issues at bathtime and neglecting impeccable hygiene leads to painful situations for these boys...

We have decided to get our baby circumsized, I don't know why not, it prevents infections later on in life and ir reduces his risks of STD's.  Why not!?  Doing it right after birth, he wont remember it, doing it when he's older because of complications could be traumatizing.  Besides those men that complain over getting circumsized, have major insecurities and probably doesn't have much to do with the circumsicion, I think they may be insecure about how their penises look in general.  Or they've had major trauma done during circumsicion.  Which makes me think, should the doctor do it with the little plasti-bell or just plain slicing? I don't know, I'll ask the ped on the interview.

I do not plan on giving my baby the Hep B vaccine, in my opinion, he's not at risk for Hep B for a while, so I'd rather wait on the vaccines until his little immune system is more developed.

i have gotten both of my boys circumsized and will get this one cut as well... boy that sounds bad...cut?? ugh
i have did searches cause i couldnt remember how long it takes to heal, and there are so many people who are totally against the procedure due to "infant pain" and such... i mean they use a cream or something to numb them a bit, and as far as phycological issues.. come on they are only DAYS old (if done at discharge) and wont remember it in a few minutes anyhow... let alone in years to come.
i know that the main reason i got my boys circumsized is just because in MY OPINION... it is just what you do... it isnt a religious or even really a medical reason for me, but it looks better...lol... and for me when having a boy, you just DO IT...lol

also as far as the pain thing.... i think some of the shots that babies have to endure and the heel pricks are probably almost as painful as the circumcision and is forgotten about just as quickly... again just MY OPINON...lol

as for the immunizations... yeah why not, if it will protect my child from something that could really hurt him/her in the future...then i am all for it.  i will have to have a rubella vaccine before i leave the hospital myself.

good luck to everyone regardless of thier decisions....
