So moms for a second time. Is it a necessary to take a tour of the hospital. What are the pros and cons of doing one. Any advise would be great.

To newbee18.. Think of going to the emergency room. They have to ask you questions, if you have med allergies & so many other things so the ER can give you proper treatment. I will not walk in with the baby coming out. But contractions are painful. it's just BEST if your preregistered. Trust me. I wasn't preregistered w/ baby 1. I just wanted to be taken back. They want to be positive how far along U are-if they need a NICU unit standing by etc. you have time. Check w/ your dr & insurance which hospital to register @. Then have it one thing you have to get done the next 2 wks. You'll feel good about having it done. And it's one less thing to do before baby arrives. you may be able to preregister online.

My midwife brought it up at my last appointment at 23 weeks and told me that it was my "homework" to get my preregistration done before coming back at 27 weeks. It obviously doesn't need to be done that early but it doesn't hurt, and then you don't have to worry about it. I procrastinated like crazy last time, think I probably did it at 34 weeks or so, I bet that's why they start reminding people to done it so early. There's always the (very small) chance of going into labor way too early and going in for an emergency preemie birth - you definitely don't want to worry about filling out paperwork on the spot if that happens. So, the earlier the better IMO.

I'm a ftm and I'm going to do a tour I don't see why not esp if where you live is a big hospital or what not.. if anything I would make sure you are preregistared at least so when the big day comes your not having to deal with that.

I preregistered online. I know where I'm going, it's been four years since my first but the birthing center is fairly small and easy to navigate. I had an intervention-free, med-free birth the first time around, looking for a repeat, and don't plan on retaking any of the birthing or breastfeeding classes (though they do have a class for new siblings so I might bring my son in for that). A tour doesn't seem necessary for me. I don't see any benefit in walking around looking at jacuzzi tubs and ice machines or talking about the room service menu.

I've been on 2 hospital tours. Same hospital.. Lol. My last baby was born 18 months ago and I went on another. They don't take up much time about 40 mins. I thought it was nice because then you know where you are going, have some clue or direction on where I'm going. At my hospital-after hours there is a side door if in labor, push a door bell they open it, then you go to the 3rd level, where you sign in. Of course you can go in through the emergency entrance but then you have that mess to deal with. Plus I was able to preregister, so when I go into labor there is NO paper work to be filled out. A huge plus! You don't want to deal with answering questions name, DOB, your health history, if you have a will, organ donor, blood transfusions are okay, insurance, etc-all the basic personal info (I'm having baby 3). Plus the hospital I'm delivering at offers prenatal yoga, parenting, nursing classes once registered. CON- the hospital bothers you about paying the difference from what the insurance will cover.. My ins. said pay a min-the hospital will estimate on the high end of what isn't covered. I actually never paid a deposit because I went into labor early. You can always say you need to think about it (it all depends on your insurance) your dBut when those contractions start you are not going to want to think about that stuff, you just want in to see a nurse & dr.
