Bath question (hope it isn't silly)

Just wondering, can a newborn be bathed in the bath tub or does one need to get a small baby bath to put on a table/high surface?

With my son we just put him on a changing pad and gave him a sponge bath until the cord fell off. Then we tried using the baby bath but he hated it, so I would just take a bath and bathe him at the same time and my husband would take him and dry and dress him while I got out.

When I had my first I actually had the nurses at the hospital show me how to bathe my baby and it's basically just a little sponge bath while the baby is laying next to the sink on a towel. Once the umbilical cord fell off tho I got a little fold up bath that fits right into the kitchen sink until she was able to sit up on her own for the big bath tub bc it was much easier for me then the little mesh thing in the big bath (which I also had).

Thanks for the input ladies, you've given me a good place to start! Our main thinking is around space. A small baby bath takes up space around the house and we are also wondering how long a baby would need a small baby bath before he can use the big bath... babies grow so quickly and we would hate to get something that can only be used for 8 months and then we need to get rid of it.

Theres also like a giant sponge you can buy to put in the tuband put them on. I think im going to try one of those. Or I saw a little mesh seat type thing to put in the tub. Theres so many options

Once the umbilical cord fell off one of us would get in the tub with the baby and let the baby lay on our legs and kind of kick and squirm in the water. They loved it and it was much easier and safer then just putting the baby in the tub and trying to keep a slippery baby safe. We also had the baby tub thing but found it was easier and less messy to just use the tub.

It depends on if the cord is still attached or not

My friend just did kind of a sponge type bath in the sink with her babies until the umbilical cord fell off.

There is nothing wrong with.using the tub but the baby's belly cannot be submerged until the cord falls off! I am getting one of the mesh seats for the bath tub.
