Thank you for the tips! I am going to start eating yogurt like crazy. Yeast infections have to be the most annoying thing to happen to a woman!! I'll ask my doc about the acidophilus pills too. I just want it to stop! HA! Thanks again for all the info!
Oh ... yeast infections and pregnancy ... talk about adding insult to injury, as if we weren't uncomfortable enough!
I have been lucky so far, but am usually plagued with yeast infections the whole time. Eating yogurt does help, but I also found that taking a daily acidophilus pill can really help as well. You probably want to check with your doc, but as it is simply live bacteria (same as in yogurt) it should be just fine. They keep your balance right "down there" so that the yeast don't take over the world. (I think of the yeast as tiny hitlers! lol) My doc cleared it for me, but it's been 8 years since I've been pregnant, so who knows what has changed ... maybe songinmind can speak to this. :) These pills are a good option for those who don't like yogurt or are lactose intolerant as well!
Agree with everything in the above post!!! It is a good idea to eat yogurt because the probiotics in it neutralize your ph in your "area" so that the yeast can't grow. I always eat yogurt when I am on antibiotics and if I don't I always get a yeast infection. Also wearing cotton underwear is the best thing because it is breathable. I hope everything works out ok for you. Good luck.
My MD told me to go with the longer treatment of Monistat (the 7 day). She said that often in pregnancy the 1 or 3 day treatments won't really get rid of things.
Also, I'm sure you've heard the advice to eat yogurt. I feel kind of crazy alternating my cranberry juice (for UTI) and yogurt (for YI).
Lastly, I would have a good talk with your MD about Diflucan- I did a lot of research into this med (all the scientific studies) and there are no good studies indicating that using it a few times at a dose of 150 or less to treat yeast infections are bad in the first trimester. Several Danish groups did studies and there was no increased risk of congenital issues period. The issues reported with diflucan have been long term treatment (>14 days) and higher doses (300mg+). (I have a masters in pharmacology, so I love reading all these studies!)
So, I have it on my list to talk to my MD about this too, I'm on day 4 of a 7 day, and I'm finally having 'some' relief- I hope things go well for you.
