i dont think it has been proven that hair dye is unsafe for pregnancy but i know that a friend of mine had caught lice from school (she was a teachers aid) while she was preggo (first trimester), the doc told her not to use the lice meds. because they were unsafe, but she used it anyways and her lil princess was perfectly fine and is now 3 years old......not sure if the lice treatment is the same sort of potency as hair dye but im sure it's pretty darn close!!!!

I had asked my reproductive endocrinologist if it was safe and he is really really strict.  I had several miscarriages.  The only meds I was allowed when I had a really bad cold was tylenol.  He said there is no problem with coloring your hair even in the first trimester but the fumes may bother you a little more so make sure you are in a well ventilated area.  Also if you are really nervous you could do a foil or use a frosting cap that way the color doesn't even touch your scalp:)

According to my doctor it's not fine to dye your hair because there are definitely chemicals not good for the baby. This is specially true during the 1st trimester because this is basically when the baby's organs are being creating (after that it's just growing).
After this I did a lot of research myself (because I don't like my more than few grey hairs!!), and I came to the conclusion that doing it yourself with natural dying products is the best solution, or just doing some highlights because the dye is not directly on the scalp.

However I had a chat with my hairdresser and even she advised me to wait until after the baby is born. Apparently the girl dying hair in the saloon had a baby with asthma, allergies and digestive system defects and the doctor says it's probably due to her job.

To summarize I'm not dying before baby is born, even if I have to live with my gray hair... And girls, who will be looking at our hair when our bellies will be huge???

take care
M

Hair dye actually has not been shown to cause problems- but doctors cannot exactly do research on unborn babies by deliberately doing something that could potentially cause harm.

I've dyed my hair while pregnant before but I can't remember which trimesters. I don't think I'm going to dye my hair this time around, though, because those are some pretty toxic chemicals.

After the 1st trimester it is okay to dye your hair. I just wouldn't do it often and make sure wherever you are getting it done, it's in a well ventilated area. I get my hair relaxed (if you don't what that is, it's like getting a perm, but the opposite) I only get it done 2-3 times a year. When I was pregnant with my son, I got it done at 7 months and with this one, I have an appt. next week (I'm already in the second trimester) and I plan on getting it done one more time before the baby is born. The salon I go to doesn't even smell like a salon and it's well ventilated. The lady there told me she had it done in all three trimesters and never had a problem with her 2 kids. I never had any problems, but I also believe everything is moderation. I think the key to dying your hair, is not letting it get into your scalp or be on your scalp for too long, so you would have to take some extra time when dying it.

I think that there is a certain kind of dye you can use.  I would google it or call a salon.  I remember reading something about it before but I dont dye my hair so I didnt commit it to memory.

lol, k... opps... I also heard that it's not good to dye your hair but I heard from friends that have done that while pregnant and they would do it at home outside where you have have fresh air and something over your mouth and nose so you don't breath in too much of your dye. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I guess baby is eating brains lol.

Kellyjo - I think that Jennifer100709 meant to actually dye your hair not blow dry it. I blow dry my hair and have not heard that it is not ok.

I also heard that you can dye your hair in the 2nd trimester but I am not postive.

I haven't heard that at all. I've been blow drying my hair since I found out I was preggo(I am now 10w & 3d). I know I did it to with my other kids and they came out just fine. Don't even know in what way it would affect your baby, except they might get scared becuase of the noise... Idk but good question.
