6W4D too early to see heartbeat?

I went in when I was 6 weeks and 4 days pregnant and had an ultrasound done. They saw the embryo but no heartbeat, my doctor also said that the embryo was small, but didnt' elaborate. Then he discovered a rather large ovarian cyst on my left ovary, but didn't tell me how big it was exactly, or explain what effect that might have on my baby.

I'm rather freaked out because this is our first pregnancy and I dont know if I'm supposed to have seen the heartbeat or not. The doctor didn't look concerned, he just told me to come back for another ultrasound in two weeks. His lack of explanation of anything has me anxious... Should I be worried, or am I just overreacting?

Just wanted to update you! They called me and set up an u/s appointment for me today, with the u/s tech this time instead of my doctor.
They found the baby's heartbeat! 132 BPM!! :) As it turns out I was a week off in my dates and was only 5W 4D last time rather than 6W 4D.

My new due date is 24 Sept 2011 <3

I have had 2 ultrasounds so far and my doctor always just tells me that the baby is still very small.  They have yet to tell me EXACTLY how far I am at this point.  I went in about two weeks ago and we could see the heart beat but it was still too small to get the actual heart rate.  It just depends I guess.  My doctor doesn't seem as concerned as I am either.  I completely understand what you are going through.  I go back for my 3rd ultrasound on Wednesday, the 2nd and they are hoping the baby has grown enough to get the actual heart rate now.

I didn't do either mostly because this little miracle wasn't really planned. I really hope that you are right :)
I go in for another u/s on feb 9th, so I will let you know how it goes! Thank you very much for your help.

Some people take their temps with a special thermometer which indicates ovulation. OPK's are Ovulation Predictor Kits. I think with you and the lack of concern with your Dr., it is very possible you ovulated later and you are just shy of how pregnant you think you are. This is why the embryo is measuring a bit smaller and there is no hb yet.  Congratulations and can't wait to hear about your next u/s!

thank for replying :)
He didn't say how big the embryo was measuring, just said that it was "a little small". I took this to mean that it wasn't as big as he would expect it to be at 6w4d, but like I said, he didn't tell me anything. Its possible that I ovulated later than I thought, because my periods are never that regular so it's hard to get an exact date.
What do you mean by tempin or doiung OPKs?

I don't think the cyst has anything to do with anything...

Oh, that's annoying. So sorry for your termoil. I would be scared too. Um, usually you should see a hb at 6w4d BUT, a matter of 4 days ovulating late or discrepancy like that you could be a little off and that's why they don't see one yet.  I'm a "little" worried that he said the embryo was small because why even say anything unless you are going to elaborate, right? Did he tell you how many weeks/days the embryo was measuring? Perhaps it was measuring 5 weeks in which you wouldn't see a hb anyways?  Of course he didn't want to worry you because a couple days off in dates could SOO mean the difference of seeing a HB or not. Were you temping or doing OPK's?
