Usually around 20 weeks they do the anatomy ultrasound and can do specific blood tests if needed/wanted. And there is nothing wrong with asking that or wanting to know...

They looked for physical abnormalities at my 20 week ultrasound and did blood work to test that same week.

You can order blood tests that can tell you some defects around 10 weeks. But for the physical stuff they will look for that around 20 weeks. May I ask why you are concerned? Would it effect your love for your child if it were born with certain "defect"?. I have a son with severe autisim. And could they have tested for that to be honest I think knowing before had would have been a heavy burden. Yes having a child with a disability is challenging. But on the other hand the rewards are so much greater. Everything he accomplishes on his own is a milestone and a reason to celebrate in our home. Children with disabilities fully understand what it means to be the outcast, the one who isn't normal. And as a result they are filled with so much love and loyalty, they bond just as feircly if not more so then normal children. And somehow manage to keep a happy positive outlook even when another kid is teasing them. In my opinion when you have a child with a disability not only do you raise them, but they raise you. They open your eyes to a whole new perspective of life you have never thought possible previously. The choice weather to get any of those tests is your of course. But you are being given a gift of life from God, I hope you wouldn't consider rejecting that gift solely based on the package it arrives in.
