Laurawr that makes me more comfortable. Thanks ladies. You've put my mind at ease... now I think we can just play rock paper scissors to decide the spelling- our normal method of breaking a stalemate. :-D
I read it as Gwen-da-lyn too.
My middle name is Madeline pronounced "mad-a-lyn" i thought people would forever be saying it as "mad-a-line" but I've very very rarely had people pronounce it incorrectly. I'm Aussie too.
I have never heard Gwendoline prounounced Gwen-Do-line. It is a very old name (beautiful) and I have always heard it as Gwendolyn but spelt in the original format. The only people who would mispronounce it are those who have never heard it before and are pronouncing it phonetically.
I pronounced it the same no matter the spelling. I think that either spelling will be fine. But I live in Utah, USA, so it may not be relevant
Imagine being named Sasset? I'm as American as Apple pie and my name confuses the c rap out of ppl lol
Never heard gwendo-line. So Gwendolyn would be my first pronunciation. And it was when I read this post.
I am an aussie and have never heard anyone pronounce it ad gwendo-line. Have always heard gwendo-lyn. Beautiful name also :)
When I read it I pronounced Gwen-duh-lyn spelled in both ways. I've considered the name myself but I'm having a boy.
I would pronounce Gwendoline just like it looks. Gwen-do-line, rhyming with mine sign pine etc. Long I. The e at the end makes it a long I not a short I.
I think the misspelling and mispronouncing is all the more important to me because as a kid and even now my best mates name is Soraya. This is completely phonetic - So-ray-a - but so many ppl say this wrong or spell it wrong even after she spells it out for them that it drives me mad. Ppl who've known her for years, her ex mother in law,u name it, ppl stuff it up. It just becomes rude. Ppl have called her everything from Sir-roy-a to Seri-ya. And I know its a far cry from a Persian princesses name to an old English name but its just one less battle I want me child to have to fight. At least our boys name is obvious- Hilton Charles. Haha my sisters name is Jessica, I must ask if anyone has ever done that to her. As a Rebecca I get asked if its got a k occasionally but usually just- normal spelling??
There are so many people out there who want a "unique" spelling to their kids name, it ruins it for the rest of us, lol.
My daughters name is Riley... I thought about spelling it Ryleigh, but was like, 'no cause then it'll be spelled wrong all the time, better pick to regular way' and I STILL have people ask the spelling, and when I say 'the normal way'... they end up spelling it Rylie, Rylee, etc.
I've even had someone ask the spelling of my name before.
Lady asks my name, I say 'Jessica' she says, 'and how do you spell that?' I just gave the dumbest look (it was over the phone lol) and I'm like, 'uh, the normal way?' lol.
My name is mispronounced and spelt all the time. And I really don't care anymore. I'm like whatever. My name is spelt alissa (traditional alyssa) people try and call me malissa, alisha... or they spell it with the y, alysa, alisa, allysa, and so forth. People have a right way they think it is spelt and no matter how many times I say the correct way it is rare it is done.
Does anyone mispronounce the grandmother's name?
I LOVE that name, and I pronounced them both the same, as the second one as well.
I read Gwend o Lyn as well. :)
Same here i read gwend a lyn as well x
I would pronounce that gwend a lyn too on first seeing it
When i first read the first spelling i pronounced it Gwend-a-lyn.
I am afraid you are right. Your child will forever be correcting people. :>((
It's a very pretty name though,. good luck
