I have an hour until my lunch break and looking at this post is about to make me eat my phone lol #preggoprobs
I eat sushi. I get the California roll (imitation crab meat, cucumber, and avocado) and ones that are deep fried which are fully cooked. I also get them without the roe if it comes on that sushi. All sushi isn't raw. And I only eat sushi from one place and its a highly well kept Japanese restaurant with a sushi bar where sushi is only made as ordered.
I worked in a very upscale sushi restaurant after high school and asked this very question. People in Japan are used to eating this way, their bodies have adapted to process raw fish on a regular basis. It leaves a baby, with improper digestive enzymes (IE not Japanese), susceptible to mercury poisoning. Now I'm not saying don't, I've had glasses of wine here and there and didn't quit smoking until halfway through my first trimester but after knowing first hand that even the freshest fish brought in every day was still processed and brought in a truck, it's just not worth the risk to me personally. I've stuck to crab and cooked seafood and my fiance is taking me out for a wonderful sushi dinner before I start back at work. Totally worth it.
I was told to never eat raw fish while pregnant..
I eat it...I love it...yummmmm...sushi..
Raw sushi can be harmful to baby. Rarely happens but its more than possible.
I would just not eat the raw stuff.
Yes, although I never eat the raw sushi to begin with because it freaks me out. I wouldn't try any new places, but my doctor said basically if a place hasn't made you sick before, chances are it won't now. Just go to reputable places with high turnover like you said. And maybe only order popular dishes just to be safe.
I eat vegetarian and cooked fish sushi. Raw seafood carries dangerous parasites for those who are not pregnant.
The respond I referred to wasn't to YOU directly, hence why I said "why do PEOPLE respond like that" and I'm fully aware that if you ask something on a forum you're bound to get many different kinds of answers, I'm not that daft. It's when people say "Oh it won't kill you to go without" that I'm referring to. Obviously going without sushi for 9 months isn't going to kill you. Obviously not going to a party isn't going to kill you. Obviously not smoking for 9 mo ths or drinking isn't going to kill you. it's just a silly/stupid thing to say. Like in family Guy when Loise says "its just water sweety, it's not gonna bite you" and Stewie quickly responds "Of COURSE it's not gonna bite you, you imbecile it's water, it doesn't have to bite you, you DROWN in it" same thing. it's just a stupid thing to say.
and the defensive "if you don't want an opinion other than Your own, dont post on a forum" is also a stupid response. If I didn't want other opinions I wouldn't bother asking.
Actually I just read an article in a pregnancy magazine that said that sushi is not bad for you while pregnant. Women in Japan have been doing it since the beginning of time. As long as you keep it in moderation and stay away from high mercury fish like tuna it's fine. Also not eating sushi that has been sitting out at a buffet or the grocery store.
I've eaten it many times throughout this pregnancy. My doctor said its just fine as long as its cooked (like tempura fried) and its not one of the nono fishe like shark, king mackerel, ect.
Respond like what? I don't think giving up something for a short amount of time that has a risk of harming my baby was so offensive. You asked and I answered. If you don't want an opinion other than your own then don't ask for one on a public forum.
People in Japan supposedly continue to eat raw fish throughout their pregnancy and are "offended" by our notion not to. Now, I'm not saying to go for it because I picked off the raw part of a sushi the other day and ate it without it. But im just not so paranoid about it. I agree, everything in moderation
I have had sushi at least 4x this pregnancy and my baby and myself are doing fine. Everything in moderation and I think with sushi it's pretty easy to tell if it will be safe to eat or not. You could get severe food poisoning from any type of food or restaurant and pregnant women still go out to eat. I say if you want sushi go for it.
Obviously 9 months without it isn't going to kill anyone. Why do people respond like that?
Given the place I go to knows me, and they're packed day in and day out, I'm pretty sure their fish hasn't been sitting there for days.
Also, wasabi and horseradish are good for you, and antibacterial, so I'm still not overly concerned about bacteria or parasites. Japanese/Asian people eat plenty of sushi pregnant and not pregnant and their babies come out totally fine.
There's such a small risk for Listeria in fish, it's really not worth getting so freaked out about it.
Oh I wish I could eat sushi my mother got it stuck in my husbands head that sushi can hurt the baby so if I even mention sushi he gets upset like for our 6 month anniversary he asked where I wanted to go to celebrate I had just heard about a sushi bar after mentioning it he stopped talking to me for the rest of the day
I only eat the rolls with crab and cooked seafood, not taking that risk because it was made right in front me. You never where it's been between the water and your plate. 9 months without sushi won't kill anyone.
