Confused

so I'm 36 weeks and 4 days
I know what Braxton hicks are but lately I can't tell if I'm having a hicks contraction or and actual one. I get a string cramping feeling in my abdoman and a lower back ache that's seem to get a little intense but not like the description of what contractions feel like. I know of course every pregnant women expirences differently in just confused and all my doctor keeps telling me is you'll know. Okay I get that to a point but then again how am I supposed to know if this is my first time ever being pregnant. Anyways help would be highly appreciated
Thank you

They should be regular, too.  BH come and go, real contractions begin and pick up steam and can be timed as every x minutes.

The contractions should get more intense and more frequent.
The pain is not alleviated with a warm shower or after resting.
Perhaps the pain will be accompanied by mucus secretions of any color, or fluid.
