Alcohol and Pregnancy: Is 'A Little Bit' Safe?

How Much Is Too Much?
“The problem with drinking alcohol during your pregnancy is that there is no amount that has been proven to be safe,” says Jacques Moritz, MD, director of gynecology at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York.

David Garry, DO, associate professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and chair of the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Task Force for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists District II/NY, agrees. He says that researchers don’t know enough about the potential effects of drinking alcohol at particular times during the pregnancy to be able to say that any time is really safe.

It’s also difficult to predict the impact of drinking on any given pregnancy because some women have higher levels of the enzyme that breaks down alcohol

It's fine. My friend had wine and beer occasionally and her baby is great. I personally am not partaking, but I'm also don't like wine or beer.

My own personal advice would be to.just wait. It's not worth risking your baby's health, no mean to sound judgemental or nothing of that nature. It's just my opinion

While there are many varying opinions on this I will say to me it's not worth it. The CDC, Surgeon General,  American College of Obstetrician's and American Academy of Pediatric all advise that women abstain from any and all alcohol use during pregnancy.  This is because not enough is really known about the effects that even a small amount of alcohol can have on any stage of a developing fetus. Who really wants to sign up for that study right?  One issue is that our liver produces the enzyme that breaks down alcohol.  Some people don't have had much of that enzyme casing more alcohol to build up in their system.  There's no way of knowing who has how much of this enzyme so it becomes a game of is it too much for your baby.  To me, as a nurse and even as someone who does enjoy wine, the unknown is too much for a glass of wine to be worth it. It's only a short amount of time to give it up. And then I know there's at least one thing I can control in the many things that can happen.

You are probably going to get unnecessary criticism for this but it is completely ok to have red wine every once in a while!
