FIRED FROM JOB!

Hi there, I'm 17 weeks & I was a secretary. I was trying to keep my pregnancy from my employer for as long as possible because HE is def not an understanding boss.
Well, somehow he found out I was pregnant & 2 days later I got "let go" with no explanation.
I know its because he found out I was pregnant! This is completely illegal & VERY unplanned especially since I was the only one working.
It's going to be very hard trying to get things for the baby let alone pay the basic bills until my husband or I find a new job & that takes time. We don't have much time.
Prayers are needed. Thanks.

Im with you.  I had to quit my job cuz they vut my hrs to nothing went from 32 hrs to 18hr " lack of work: they said mean while the other person that work withstill have a good 30hrs.  When I brought it up they gave a trillion reasons why it wasn't discrimination. I tried to apply for unemployment but the I didn't get it cuz they jad my hrs spread out alot amd when I ask them to condense my days so I can get it.  They told me it was point less cuz I only had a few months left and they weren't gonna switch schedule for just a few months.

There is nothing stating you need to tell your employer that you are pregnant. I can do that if I want to. I am not "required" to. Big difference. So, I did not "screw myself". I was waiting until I was ready. But thank you for your opinion.

I agree with you. It is a small business, I was their secretary. I did a great job and was praised by all the customers and maybe once by the boss. (he is a very difficult person). He did tell me that I'm doing a great job.
No one else was being let go. Like I said, very small business, (5-6 employee's maybe).
No warnings.
I was NEVER LATE and NEVER CALLED OUT or missed any work.
He did not give me a notice, he simply stopped me outside the job before the start of day and said "I'm sorry but things just aren't working out... you can come back tomorrow for your paycheck etc..."
I was shocked.
I found out a week later that he "heard through another person" that I am pregnant. He made several remarks about that to said person.
All of this happened the day before he "let me go".
Convenient?? I doubt it. He is sexist to begin with. Owell, my loss I guess. But, I know for a fact that I was discriminated against!
And, I do believe in Karma.

You're not legally obligated to tell an employer you're pregnant. No more than you have tp tell them if you're gay, straight, married, single, Christian,Jewish..etc..
And its very illegal for them to ask.

I would definitely file for unemployment and look into what can be done for you in the way of lawyers etc.
I live in NH we're a "fire at will" state. No explanation has to be given, that said. If you can build a reasonable case... you might have something. Worth a try..
Were you given warnings about your work?
Were you late?
Is the company" letting anyone else go"?
Did they have a replacement? Thats a very good point that was made here.

It might not work, you can try. That way you know you did all you could.

Totally stupid this happened to you...im sorry <3

Alot of states are right to hire right to fire which means they don't have to have a reason to fire you.  You screwed yourself because you failed to tell him you were pregnant and have no documentation backing you up that that is why he fired you. Since you failed to inform him he can say that he didn't know so I honestly doubt you have a leg to stand on with that. This is why you should always notify your job with written documentation that you are pregnant as soon as you find out.

Like everyone's saying talk to a lawyer and call ur local labor office. Also look into unemployment if ur in the states. It takes awhile to get but atleast its.something while ur looking for another job.

I would definitely ask for an explanation. He cannot deny you that and if he does I would definitely go and talk to a lawyer because that is indeed illegal. That is awful, I hate people like that.

Yea, the fact that he didn't already have your replacement shows that he let you go very unexpectedly. You can contact bureau of laborindustries in your state and they will help you with representation.
