breathing problem

I have suffered with anxiety for over four years and recently had cognetive treatment which I found very helpful . However over the last few weeks I  seem to want to gulp all the time and it restricts my breathing especially  during the evening and even at night and I wake up feeling as if I cant breathe. Is this due to anxiety or could it be another problem. I saw a cardiologist last year and all was well there. I would appreciate any sugestions to deal with this as its driving me mad.

The desire to gulp is an unusual symptom.  It could be an expression of anxiety but could also be due to excessive saliva or due to excessive mucus from your nose or sinuses.  It might also be due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is the reflux of stomach contents into your esophagus.

Your doctor may want to consider having your throat examined by a GI specialist.

Good luck and stay with the cognitive therapy.
