Hi doctor,
Many thanks for your reply.
Can you please tell me when I should be tested for syphilis and Herpes after that encounter ?
Even I am have no symtoms after a period of time to acertain am not infected.
Thanks in advance.
Condoms are virtually 100% protective against STDs transmitted through semen and vaginal fluid, like chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and hepatitis. They are less protective against STDs transmitted skin-to-skin, like syphilis, HPV, and herpes. But still they provide very good protection against even those infections. However, I have no way of knowing the likelihood your partner was infected with any STD, and I can never make an accurate prediction for any particular sexual exposure.
If you are having no symptoms, you probably do not need testing (and there is no test for HPV anyway), and most likely you don't have anything you can transmit to your wife. But I never guarantee that someone isn't infected and you will need to make your own decision. If you want more definite reassurance, you need to see a health care provider and follow his or her advice about testing and sex with your wife.
Good luck-- HHH, MD
