Just a few questions about genital herpes

Hello,

I am afraid to have an antibody test because I know it will cripple me emotionally, although I know I will eventually have to have one. Until then..

I've battled with the idea of herpes for months. My initial symptoms were pain with urination, swollen lymph nodes, discharge and burning in the soles of one foot. I never had any lesions, and i was negative for STIs.

A few weeks ago, the burning on the sole of my right foot started again. It feels as if there is pressure and slight numbess, not really pain. I also had pain in my lower back. What's different now is I have had tingling on my labia majora by my clitoris for over a week. My questions are..

1) I know the experts in this forum have said that burning in soles of feet is not related to herpes, but I have read so many user posts and a couple of medical essays that mention this symptom being related to herpes and recurrent outbreaks. Why would it, or why would it not cause this feeling, in your opinion?

2) I read in Terri Warren's herpes handbook that there is such thing as an aborted recurrence, where the prodromal tingling can occur but the lesions never surface. Should I be concerned about this?

3) If the tingling in my labia was related to herpes, is it normal for it to last over a week on and off? Still don't have any lesions, nor any redness at all, the skin looks perfectly normal...

4) I'm also trying to time my initial symptoms from when I had sex... what is the average time it takes to show symptoms like lymph nodes and pain with urination if it were due to herpes?

5) What is the likelihood of getting herpes from someone from two sexual encounters in a week if they were unprotected (I am a woman), and the other person is not known to have herpes, and did not have any signs or symptoms of it at the time?

Thank you for your patience with such a commonly asked question. The stigma surrounding herpes is wrong, but it doesn't stop me from being affected by it...

Welcome back to our Forum.  I can't help but notice the you have made over 80 posts on MedHelp Forum an community sites and that the responses have typically not supported that possibility that you have genital herpes.  Despite this, you seem to have trouble putting the possibility aside..  I considered simply deleting your post is our protocol when clients repeatedly ask the same questions again and again and where there is nothing for others to read in reviewing the interchange.  Instead I will provide a single answer to your questions an then conclude with a bit of advice.

1) I know the experts in this forum have said that burning in soles of feet is not related to herpes, but I have read so many user posts and a couple of medical essays that mention this symptom being related to herpes and recurrent outbreaks. Why would it, or why would it not cause this feeling, in your opinion?

Simple experience gained by our over 70 combined years in STD care and research, as well as numerous clinical studies indicate that HSV does not cause chronic neuropathic pain and, when there is pain in the extremities relate to HSV, the discomfort tends to last only a few days at most. While the internet is full of the sorts of reports you mention, there is no scientific basis for such reports.

2) I read in Terri Warren's herpes handbook that there is such thing as an aborted recurrence, where the prodromal tingling can occur but the lesions never surface. Should I be concerned about this?

No, these occurrences are relatively brief in nature.  Your symptoms are not suggestive of aborted recurrence or false prodrome.

3) If the tingling in my labia was related to herpes, is it normal for it to last over a week on and off? Still don't have any lesions, nor any redness at all, the skin looks perfectly normal...

Again no.  HSV pains occurs (typically with the presence of lesions) an then resolves over the course of a few (less than five) days.  It does not come and go during an episode or over just a few days

4) I'm also trying to time my initial symptoms from when I had sex... what is the average time it takes to show symptoms like lymph nodes and pain with urination if it were due to herpes?

Symptoms of HSV typically occur within 14 days of an exposure.

5) What is the likelihood of getting herpes from someone from two sexual encounters in a week if they were unprotected (I am a woman), and the other person is not known to have herpes, and did not have any signs or symptoms of it at the time?

Very low- certainly less than 1% and more likely fare less than that.

My comment.  You have let your fears about herpes take over your life.  You have sought advice and repeatedly been told that HSV is not a concern but you cannot let go.  It is now time to seek professional assistance in managing this inappropriate fear.  Your persistent fear is not doing you any good and may be doing you harm in terms of your time an interactions with other.

This ends this thread.. There will be no further comments.  I wish you well.  EWH
