Possible STD transmission from Sex Toys?

Hello,

I'm a 25 year old virgin who likes to masturbate but wanted to try something new.  About ten days ago I had purchased a cyberskin vagina and a butt plug along with a water-based lubricant and antibacterial toy cleaner from an adult gift shop.  The toys were in their original boxes and did not appear to be tampered with.  They were however capable of being opened.  The lubricant and the cleaner were sealed in their respective bottles and were not expired.

I took them home and before using them inspected them once more.  Once again they didn't appear tampered with but to be on the safe side I washed and cleaned them with warm water and the antibacterial cleaner.  Once they were clean I dried them off and used the lubricant on them before masturbating.  Immediately following use of the cyberskin vagina, I noticed an irritation on the glans of my penis.  To clarify, the inside of the vagina had small rubber nodules which were meant to rub against the penis.  It really irritated and caused redness, soreness, and flaking for two days.  A few days later and even now I have noticed a slight irritation while urinating, ejaculating, and at times even noticed a clear discharge from the penis.  It looks a lot like pre-ejaculate but I'll notice it even when I'm not masturbating.

I have only used the products that one time.  The butt plug didn't give me any problems initially, but I've recently noticed irritation in my rectum.  Is it possible I could have acquired an STD/STI from these toys?  I called the place I bought them from and the clerk assured me they are not used by anyone in the store.  What should I do?

They call them STDs because you have to have sex to catch them -- and that means sex with another person.  Here are two threads that explain why, based on the biology of STDs and HIV.  Please read them.  For the second one, start with the December 14 follow-up comment.

That will be all for this thread.  I won't have any more comments.

I'm still waiting on the results for my urinalysis.  However, I forgot to mention in my initial post that I was staying in a hotel when I used the sex toys.  After using them I showered and dried off with a hotel towel, including my penis that was irritated and chaffed from the cyberskin vagina.  Do you think this might have caused an STD/STI infection?

No surprise, but hope you find it reassuring that your doctor and I agree with one another.  Your symptoms should clear up soon, without treatment.

I went to my doctor and was examined.  I gave them the full and accurate history I posted on this forum.  They think if anything it is a chemical irritation or allergy to the products used.  Just to be sure they sent me for a urinalysis which I should have the results of this week.  My doctor said there is no possible scenario of an STD with the above information.

One possibility might be a chemical irritation or allergy to the lubricant or plastic.  Just a guess.

Welcome to the forum.

Clearly no STD is possible in this situation.  Although your symptoms are compatible with an STD like nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), in this case there has to be some other explanation.  I have never seen a patient with this sort of situation; if someone came to the clinic with such a story, and if he turned out to really have NGU, I would question whether he was giving a truthful sexual history.  But you have no reason to do that, so I have to believe your story.  All I can suggest is that see a health care provider for examination and testing to see what is going on.  Feel free to return with a comment to let me know what the doctor or clinic says about it.  Be sure you give them the full and accurate history, as you did here.

Regards--  HHH, MD
