Simple injury or STD?

About a year ago I had unprotected sex with a girl who soon after had a Herpes outbreak that was believed to be HSV-1.  Planned Parenthood didn't swab it and by the time she got to her GP or GYN, it was long gone.  I freaked out and spent countless hours on this site, looking at my penis and going to doctors, dermatologists and even paying for my own STD tests.  At 3.5-4 months I paid for a complete run through tests of all of the STD's (including the HerpeSelect) and it came up negative on all counts.  A rash that I was probably over analyzing still persisted, so my Dermatologist did a biopsy to rule out cancer, etc.  Nothing.  I committed myself to never putting myself through that again and put it all behind me.

Two nights ago I was away on business and to take care of some stress, I decided to masturbate in the shower.  I used some of the hotel soap and away I went.  I was pretty tired, so it was taking longer than I'd hoped and as I was finishing up, it started to hurt/sting a little around the rim of my glans - the soap wasn't very "sudsy" and lubricating.  (the shower actually went cold it took so long)  I finally ejaculated and when I got out of the shower, it looked like I broke some blood vessels in that area.  (I'm not sure if that's what I did, I'm just describing)  It was pretty tender and when I got up yesterday morning it still looked pretty much the same.  One main red, really irritated area and a few smaller points about the size of a pinhead.  None have broken out into blisters, they're just red areas but the main one hurts quite a bit.  I'm starting to wonder if this all goes back to last year and beginning to worry.

My common sense/practical thinking says that the hotel soap, friction and the long time it took me to ejaculate are to blame.  My worrysome side is very edgy though and I don't want to put myself through what I went through last year.

This all said - could I have HSV and it have not really shown up for a year in either the tests or in symptoms?  Or is did I just do this to myself in the shower?

Your thoughts on my condition and suggestions of next steps would be greatly appreciated.

Herpes lesions do not come and go, or change in prominence, over the course of yours.  You do not have herpes, period.  Show the lesions to your own health care provider(s) and accept his/her advice. Your blood test result is accurate.

Hi Doc,

Yes, I tested negative for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 last year a little bit past the 12 week time from possible exposure.  I very quickly put it all behind me after I got those results.

I'm trying to pay as little attention as possible to "whatever" is going on down there while at the same time doing my best not to irritate things further.  Yesterday afternoon I took a shower and I noticed after I got in the shower that the red areas (both the tiny pinhead sized ones and the larger 2-3mm area) had changed into blister-looking.  To be clear, they weren't that way when I got into the shower.  I was pretty freaked out.  An hour or so later when I urinated, they had "gone back down" to being just red areas.  This morning when I showered they did the same.  Is this normal penis healing or not?

Lastly, since I had the HerpeSelect test last year right at the end of the widely given 12 week timeframe, is there any chance of me going positive later than that?

Thanks again!

If you had a HerpeSelect test that was negative than you can believe that....it was the soap...a lot of us have had the same thing happen:).

Not seeing the irritated area, I can't comment on it--but your own common sense diagnosis makes sense to me. You don't specifically say that your HerpeSelect test was negative for both HSV-1 and HSV-2.  But if it was, and you haven't had any other new sexual exposures since the one you describe, then your genital symptoms cannot be due to herpes, period.  My suggestion for "next steps" is to let your penis heal then do nothing more.  Forget about it--you don't have genital herpes.

Good luck--  HHH, MD

From what I've read, HSV 1 is the "cold-sore" version of herpes which 75% of all Americans already have.  That I wouldn't worry about, and if you've done all those expensive tests, (all coming back negative) don't give it a second thought, (I promise this is what the doc will say).

BTW, I've joined my husband in the shower before and used soap  that doesn't lather well or leaves a residue.  It can leave those results, which basically look like irritation of the skin.  Also, he says it burns when he urinates if the soap gets inside the urethra, so that may be a possibility.  I really do think you're alright.  Try not to think about it, I think you're clean.  Good luck and I hope that helps.

Hey doc sorry to add on to already overcrowded threads. I've had no lesions or blisters but have some swollen oil glands around my penis head rim, my doc said they aren't anything that looks like herpes. I do have some stinging/burning when I pee at times, my groin area also feels very sore. Also the area around my meatus is a little swollen. I am circumsized by the way.

1) So I was just wondering if this sounds like herpes since I have no lesions or blisters but pain upon urination and a groin pains?
