Welcome to the Forum. I'll try to help. Ureaplasma is a bacterium which is normally present in the male genital tract and efforts to "treat" it are typically unsuccessful, leading to transient negative tests, followed by recurrence. In the past there have been efforts to associate this organism with a urethritis syndrome referred to as nongonococcal urethritis ((NGU) or non-specific urethritis (NSU). Unfortunately, the test is available and some clinicians choose to test for it. I'm not sure why you were tested. Unless I am missing something, as you are asymptomatic and in a mutually monogamous relationship, I see no reason for concern or for treatment (and I find myself wondering why you were tested). I would not have tested you for this and if you were referred to me with a positive test result, I would not try to treat you.
I hope these comments are helpful. If there are further questions, please follow-up. You may wish to discuss this with the doctor who ordered this test or, better yet, experts at a GUM clinic. EWH
Thank you for your reply
I got tested as I am quite paranoid about STDs and STIs and test every year or so. The test for the the UU was just part of the package. My girlfriend had some cervical issues over the last few months and was wondering if there was a link?
AsI said before, there is no proven link. I would not have done the test and your results are the reason why- they just fuel paranoia. EWH
