Gastro-Whatta???

I had my upper endoscopy today for my upper right pain and fullness feeling.  I have Gastroparesis, which is when your stomach muscles don't function properly and prevents your stomach from emptying.  This totally explains my bloating and fullness feeling.  I am basically just carrying around undigested food in my belly at all times.  There is no cure, but medicine and diet change can help.  The diet change involves cutting out all high fiber foods and those that digest slowly.  So...NO oatmeal, berries, fresh fruit, fresh veggies, whole grains, fatty foods etc, etc.......

The interesting thing is that this can be caused when your vagus nerve is dammaged.  (Hmmm...nerves...)  This is actually the leading cause of this disorder.  This is getting me wondering, of course.  I have other nerve dammage as well, so what is causing all this??  is it possible that my stenosis could cause dammage to my vagus nerve???  I have no idea.  I have my appt with the new neurosurgeon next week though, so maybe he can shed some light.

Also, the Doc who did my procedure today said that this was not likely causing my upper right pain and he is going to look further into checking my gallbladder function.

I'm doing okay..but this diet change is going to be difficult!!

Hi Kris,
I have had gastroparesis since 2000, why i got it is the million dollar question..
I developed years after getting  my gallbladder removed. I actually thot the gallbladder had grown back as its the same region of pain.. Starteed in  2000 incred pain after eating after doc do doc finally confirmed as gastroparesis.. Then started being inable to defacate myself started daily enemas.. then started blacking out and dropping after sweat tests diagnosis is autonomic neuropathy..
I have 5 half meals a day inc one shake for nutrition called ENSURE.. I dont make vit b anymore so have injectios ( might be worth getting a blood test checj b12 levels )
So ask away the questions.. Cut out as much fibre as you can for relief even just go liquids for a few days it sooo helps.
I have as little fibre as possible.. the pain level is dramatically less..
Chat anytime.. I have neurosurgery this thurs 25th in aus for a congneital cyst that continuallly fills up with fluid, shunt is being put iin.
I am now constantly being reviewed for MS all the time  i suppose it can never be ruled out..

Mine is cervical stenosis.  My disc bulge is the C5/6 level.  I'm eager to speak with my neuro and the new neurosurgeon regarding a connection.

Thanks for the response, Sam!

Kristin, I'm sorry that you have this as well to contend with. And all those lovely foods that you can't eat....I could weep for you...

Re the vagus nerve. I read a while back (in relation to some brachial plexus nerve stuff that I have going on resulting directly from c-spine probs) that there is a causal link between c-spine nerve compression and e.g. vagus.

Forgive me, I don't rememberwhere your stenosis is...I wonder if it's all directly linked?

Fruits and veggies are absolutely healthy, but they contain a lot of fiber which moves slowly and tends to just sit in the stomach of those with gastroparesis.  Same deal with whole grain.

I'm supposed to eat things that pass more quickly and that are low fiber and low fat.  White bread, white rice, canned peaches, ground meats....so basically i can't eat anything healthy which annoys me to my very core!

I have a list of approved foods and a list of absolute nos.  I guess I am lucky-some people with this disorder can tolerate liquids only and some have to have a feeding tube that bypasses the stomach entirely and goes straight into the intestines.

Oh, and I can have yogurt which I am now planning on living on!  So that's good news.

And yes, Theresa-I have a dx, I am glad about that too.  maybe this is the start of getting some real answers for me!  I'll get used to the diet change.

Kristin,
I looked it up..Wow???  I found some of the suspected causes really interesting.
Diabetes,Parkinson's,Scleroderma,Hypothyroidism.All cause nerve damage....????
Atleast you got a real dx for somthing....Maybe this will get you one step closer to finding the source of all your issues....
Try to think positive about the diet,Keep telling yourself that it is for a reason and will help you....Keep us posted...
Please Take Care, Theresa
