Sperm can live 5-7 days, so there's really no "safe" time when you can't get pregnant. There's also no "safe" time when you can't catch something from each other if you not using risk reduction. As I said, if you want to prevent pregnancy now, try Plan B. And then get tested for both pregnancy and infections. Dr. J

If you've had unprotected penis-vagina sex, of course there's a chance you're pregnant! That's how pregnancy happens: Unprotected sex = possible pregnancy/infection/disease.

Since the home pregnancy test is most reliable 2 weeks after your period; if you don't want to wait, you might consider getting Plan B from your local pharmacy (the "morning-after pill") which is most effective when taken up to 72 hours after unprotected p-v.

However, pregnancy tests aren't always reliable, and if you continue spotting, it could indicate pregnancy--or other conditions such as ectopic pregnancy, which will not typically be detected by a home pregnancy test. Why take a chance? If your condition continues, see your doctor to help you figure out your options.

Also: WHY are you having unprotected p-v sex? Do you want to get pregnant? Expose yourself to various infections and diseases? Remember what we say here at Dr. J's House of Pleasure: "With Great Sex Comes Great Responsibility."

Talk with your doctor about various birth control and risk reduction options to decide which is best for you. If you don't yet have a doctor, you can do a search for your closest Planned Parenthood or women's clinic. Most of these are either free or low-cost. Dr. J

There are two types of pregnancy tests. One tests the blood for the pregnancy hormone, hCG. The other checks the urine for this hormone. You can do a urine test at home with a home pregnancy test. You need to see a doctor to have blood tests.

These days, most women first use home pregnancy tests (HPT) to find out if they are pregnant. HPTs are inexpensive, private, and easy to use. Urine tests will be able to tell if you're pregnant about 2 weeks after ovulation. Some more sensitive urine tests claim that they can tell if you are pregnant as early as one day after a missed period.

Wait to see if you get your period on time; if it doesn't come, get tested. Dr. J
