looking for options

I was wondering what type of options I have for birth control if I am not allowed to use any type of hormonal treatment for other medical reasons?? I have irregular periods and wanted to make them easier to predict, but I think you can only do that by hormones. I feel like every time I'm "late" I get so overly nervous that I am pregnant, even though I haven't actually had intercourse yet. I have "fooled around" with my boyfriend and he has fingered me, but I am too afraid to actually have sex. I feel like I'm just about paranoid that I'd get pregnant. Like right now, because I'm late again and really stressing about maybe being pregnant.

I took the pregnancy test, and it came up negative, but I am still really late. I'm on day 43.

Can you really get pregnant, even without sexual intercourse? The whole reason, basically, for me not having sex was because of my fear of pregnancy. I don't know if he had precum when he had touched himself before fingering me. I can't really remember everything that happened that night since it's been over a month ago.

Be smart. Get a home pregnancy kit and use it. If you're not comfortable with your current gynecologist, go to your nearest Planned Parenthood or women's clinic, and find a new doc. It's time to take charge of your life and make decisions that will both enhance your sexual pleasure and lower your risk of pregnancy and infection. Dr. J

The irregular periods are driving me crazy. I haven't talked to my gyno yet, usually try to avoid that doctor. I'm still worried about possibly being pregnant since it's been 40 days now. If I'm actually on time, it's around 29 day cycles. Though I have been up to 47 days or so, in the past, cycle wise. The worst part of that is that my boyfriend just left me, so if I really am pregnant, I have to go back to him and tell him. My friend thinks he left me since I wouldn't have sex with him. So much for his lies about not being like other guys.

Hi there.

First, it's a great sign that you're aware of your risk and that you want to find a form of birth control that works best for you when you decide to have penis-vagina sex. There are many methods available that don't rely on hormones, unlike those mentioned above. When choosing one, I generally counsel that you should try several methods to determine which is easiest to use, which you're most likely to use and which fits within the budget of you and your partner (he should definitely contribute to the cost).

Pills, patch, shot, ring: all these are hormonal. The barrier/chemical methods have high success rates when used properly. When you combine a barrier such as a condom or diaphragm with a spermicide and use properly, your risk is minimal.

I would encourage you to learn about all these methods. You can go to the excellent online site www.Scarleteen.com which has a great section on birth control options.

And you're correct: prior to ejaculating, men expel a fluid that can contain millions of sperm. For this reason, be sure you don't come in contact with a penis unless you're protected.

You mention that you have irregular periods. This must drive you crazy! Have you asked your gynecologist if there's another method besides hormones that might be an option for helping to regulate your cycle? Or you could ask the MedHelp Gynecology Expert at

Best of luck to you. Dr. J

Well I'm too late for taking the morning after pill(plan B). I didn't think about becoming pregnant since we hadn't actually had sex(meaning the only thing that was in me was his finger.) We were going to have sex that day, but I backed out last minute because he didn't have a condom. Though after finding out that pre-*** can get you pregnant and now that I'm a little over a week late, it's really worrying me that I might be pregnant. It would be better if my periods were more predictable, but they tend to vary a lot.

have the injection if you're worried and there is now a over the counter pill you can take after sex if the condom spits
