CVA for more than a year

My mom is 60 yr and had a CVA last year and both side of the brain affected, she cant recognized us and everytime we talked to her shes just staring at us and no facial expression response.Since then shes already bedridden and developed multiple bedsores that hards to heal.We feed her through NGT tube . My question is ...shes been through NGT for more than a year and im just thinking if we can put her on PEG, but my some of my family member dont agree  since my mom is so skinny and lost a lot of weight and its a invassive procedures thinking of the complications.
And i dont know what other treatment or rehabilitation aside from PT, does Speech language therapy work? Please share me those who has same experience..thank you..from PHILIPPINES

My mother had a NG tube after her stroke. Things to think about with the NG tube vs Peg. The NG tube is very uncomfortable, many people with them have runny noses, and after awhile the area gets very sore. Although the Peg tube can be just as bad, patients seem to not bother them as much ...my mother pulled her NG tube out all the time.

My mothers therepy stopped after a year...of course a lot of it had to do with insurance and not wanting to pay for someone that they saw as not getting any better.

The music idea from the other poster is great. We did that with my mom and she would tap her foot to the music.

As far as the family arguments...it's only the beginning...

I hope things go well for you..

Hi,

What does the neurologist say about the severity of the disease in your mother's case?

You could definitely discuss about PEG with a gastroenterologist and then decide whether it would help in your mother's case. You could also talk to your doctor about intramuscular anabolic steroids to counter the severe catabolic state.

Continue with the physical therapy; i am sure you are already using an air mattress and also a position change every two hours.

Let us know her CT and MRI reports if possible.

Post us if you have any other doubts.

Regards.
