I am a brain stroke survivor

My name is Mahmood, a male of 58 years, from Islamabad, Pakistan. I have suffered a brain hemorrhage (intracerebral bleed) on November 14, 2009 due to high blood pressure (220/140). My memory was very badly affected due to this episode. I have been under treatment of a neurologist, a psychiatrist, and a speech therapist. In addition to continuous treatment, I have been relying heavily on meditation (prayers). My memory has been improving gradually and slowly and I have been able to relearn some important abilities like reading, writing and driving. However, I have difficulty understanding speech. My doctors have been assuring me that my recovery would be improved gradually. However, they are not able to give me with certainty how long it would take to regain or relearn understanding speech. I am interested to learn about experiences of survivors whose oral understanding has been affected due to a brain stroke. I highly appreciate your assistance and guidance. Mahmood

This breathing technique you can do yourself, and it will stimulate your brain cells, as extra oxygen goes into the left and right brain. Do this for 30 minutes, twice a day and let me know your progress after 30 days, or whenever you feel like writing.Keep some notes of your progress.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Hello Mahmood,
I came to this page looking for information about strokes because my 52 year old son suffered a massive stroke on Dec. 31, 2010 and wasn't found for 2 days.
My heart is sad for both you and my son.
It sounds as though you are rehabilitating quite well although not as quickly as you wish. Part of the difficulty after a stroke (and I know from whence I speak - I had the same kind of stroke you did an Intra-cranial bleed (sub-arachnoid hematoma) back in Feb. 1970.) is impatience. All things come in their own time as long as you're willing and able to contribute to the improvement.  I would like to continue writing to you to encourage you to just keep on keeping on.  Of utmost importance, I believe, is keeping yourself optimistic while being accepting of your limitations - frustration has got to be one of the ugliest things to deal with during your healing. Thankfully medical science knows ever so much more about strokes and their after affects and means of healing thereapies than they did when I was younger back then.  I'm now 77 and you'll be happy to know that my mental capacities have all come back with a passion, reading, writing, communicating, listening, speaking...all are in perfect condition. While the healing process is different for each of us, I'm happy to say that it wasn't really all that long a time before everything was back to normal. The only thing that had changed was my greater appreciation for life itself and all the world's people.  I was LUCKY,  but my faith has also been a sustaining factor.
You'll heal as much as is necessary for you to complete your life's work, Mahmood, so please, just keep the faith, laugh, love and be happy.
Many Blessings
You must keep yourself active both mentally and physically while also  living in that special KNOWING PLACE inside that you are and will be OK. Your path may have been strewn with detours, but you are still you, perhaps even a better you than you were before. Listen to only positive people, upbeat music, encouraging media and the still small voice within you that knows all is still well.
