My Dad had a Stroke...Please HELP!!!!

Hi  My dad is 60 years old & had a Hemorrhagic Intracranial stroke affecting the basal ganglia. This was in Sept. 2008. He was in a coma for 5 weeks & of course the doctors said he wouldn't live. Good news he did live. He is in a long term care facility now. He can eat on his own, good motor skills, can speak very clearly,is in a wheelchair but can walk w/ assistance very short distances. The huge problem is he has lost all short term and most long term memory. He makes up stories sometimes and still thinks he is in the Navy and on a ship (he used to be). He sometimes seems to know that I am his daughter if I remind him, same with my 2 other sisters but forgets our age. He does still remember his faith in God which is amazing. If you tell him something a second later he forgets. Because of that he can not take care of himself. I would love for one day to at least get him into an assisted living where he can be somewhat independent. I just would like to know if there is anyone out there in the same situation who's loved one lost memory and it returned even after a year. I can not afford the best rehab but the place he is in now is decent. Any advice, shared story would mean the world to me! I just miss my dad...I am grateful he lived but it is hard when someone is physically but not mentally there....

Thank you,
Lisa

Good news for you is that your dad is not suffering from a neurodegerative like Alzhermer's. As far as your dad's temporal lobe, parietal lobe, cingulate gyrus and parts or his frontal cortex are being affected it is most likely to have huge effect on his memory and cognitive functions. The good news? The brain is a wonder and unless it is battling with a neurodegenerative desease it can perform very well at healing itself and regenerating cells in the frontal cortex for that matter. Brain plasticy for that matter is a subject that is reversible eg curable eg your dad could have more or less damages from his stroke depending on his age, healing mechanisms and will.
