Underactive Thyroid Diagnosis

Receiving back my blood test my doctor told me I have a TSH result of 6.924
What is said to be a underactive active thyroid and will need to start on synthroid. Being 27, female, generally healthy and has never even taken as much as an asprin in two years I am a bit floored by the idea of having to now take a medication for what seems to be the rest of my life. Are there no lifestyle changes I can make? No special diet out there that can help me break my dependance on having to take a daily dose of something for my thyroid or atleast subside any complications I may have?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
There is no definite indication for meds at this point.  Would repeat thyroid labs including TPO antibody in 6 weeks to see if there is a persistent abnormality.  Once the TSH is >10, treatment is recommended in virtually all cases.
