We have a protocol for thyroidectomy for Graves here in sarasota. It is under general anesthesia but with minimal incision and excellent recovery. I don't know of anyone else in the state doing this on a regular basis.
I'm 53 years old, work full time married and no kids. My GP found a nodule during a physical in 6/08. I had no symptoms. I had a partial in 9/08 and a completion on10/30/08 (by choice, I was betting my nodule wasn't malignant, but it was). Then RAI 131 right before Thanksgiving. I asked questions on this site as well as talking w/ Dr Lupo's staff a few times. They were very helpful. My surgeon here in Orlando was Dr. Ivan Rosado. He doesn't do minimallly invasive, but he went in twice and I only have a small mark on my neck; wouldn't even call it a scar. He was wonderful. Willing to talk as answer as many questions as you have. No pain, no complications. It's a '23 hour" stay. In at 6 am, surgery at 10, stay overnight and out by 9 the next morning. Dr Rosado does +/-200 thyroidectomies a year at Fl. Hospital in Altamonte Springs. Honestly, I've had canker sores and sinus headaches that werre 1000x worse than these surgeries. No I'm on 125 Synthroid and my 6 month T panel came back great.Hope this helps. Good Luck.
