Why did you have your thyroid removed ?
I am also trying to conceive after thryroid surgery 5 months ago. My dr. told me that you have to increase synthroid when pregnant because the placenta eats into the synthroid. You should let your dr. know as soon as you are pg!!!
Hi Jaime,
Good luck with your planned pregancy. From what I have seen the increase in thryoid meds is usually by 25 - 40%.
You should discuss with your Dr. in advance of getting pregnant. I also understand that the increase in thyroid meds will start pretty soon after conception.
Make sure your TSH is at optimal level (I think usually around 1) before you TTC.
There is some good info about pregnancy and hypothyroid on the Mary Shomon thyroid site.
Best wishes
Sally
Thank You for your advice. Would my synthroid need to be adjusted
alot during pregnancy? I am on 150 mcg now. And does that dose stay
the same will trying to concieve?
Thanks Jaime
The chances should be quite good from a thyroid standpoint and it has been 6 months since RAI - so should be safe -- make sure the levothyroxine dose is monitored/adjusted closely during pregnancy.
