Insomnia & rapid heartbeat

For the past two weeks I try, and try to sleep. I lay awake all night, tossing and turning, eventually getting up. Around nine or ten pm my heartbeat starts to accelerate, and continues all evening. At some points my heart was racing so fast I could not count the beats and it felt more like "flip flopping" in my chest. This makes me wonder if something is very wrong. I have never had problems sleeping, or with my heart for that matter. I am living on hour naps to get by. This past week,I have tried sleep aids, a glass of wine before bed, a nice meditation cd...all to no avail. The rapid heart beat I do not contribute to the anxiety of coming nightfall and insomnia, as it was here from the beginning.

High calcium also causes palpations and rapid HB, as well as BP issues, low and high.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
You should ideally consult a sleep specialist as you could be suffering from insomnia. This can be due to physical or emotional stress, depression, allergies, asthma, high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, hyperthyroidism, and sleep apnea. You should ideally consult an internal medicine specialist and a sleep specialist for this. If no cause is found then some counseling may help.
Physical and emotional stress, depression and too much intake of caffeine during the day could also be a cause. Hence cut down on coffee if you take this, try and go for brisk walks in the evening, avoid sleeping during the day, and take a warm glass of milk at bed time. Try yoga, it helps. See if these tips help you.
Menopause (not in your case), polycystic ovary and other hormonal changes too could be a cause.
Since I cannot examine you and know other related conditions you may be having, nor is a detailed history possible on net, I have listed the various possibilities that should be looked into. Please consult your PCP for primary examination followed by proper referral. Take care!

OH...PS...for the insomnia.

Best I can tell you is work hard, all day, wear yourself out, then take a really hot epsom salt bath, but on your most comfy jammies, and sink into bed.  If you awake, just get up, laying there wont help and makes it worse.

I keep a few boring movies in my DVR que, or good ones that I have seen before....I will put that on, make sure ifs something you like, but not too loud.  I like ...Contact...good actors, not many explosions...lol..., I can watch for a while, but then I can go to sleep on the couch easier than in the bed...my mind is occupied.

Good luck.

You seem to be at the perfect age for thyroid problems to begin...very common.

Check out hyper and hypo thyroidism, have a thyroid panel run, and ask for parathyroid levels as well.

check out parathyroid.com for info on HPTH.

The endocrine glands are resposnible for producing the hormones that control the heart function and just about every other major system in the body....loook there.
