Low/Moderate myopia and RD

Hello, I was wondering what are the chances of someone with about -3 diopters of myopia having a retinal detachment.(I have seen statistics of people with no myopia, and with high myopia but not inbetween. I was also wondering how much greater are the chances of having a RD from trauma to the eye compared to someone with normal vision. Thanks in advance.

One think you could do for your general eye health is take Lutein.  If it's in your multivitamin/multimineral it's probably 3 mg.  I take an additional 20 mg as a certain eye disease runs in our family, and it seems to be keeping me out of reading glasses.

I do not recommend the "eye health" formulas you see for sale as they duplicate many things already in a multivitamin and add some things that are easy to get too much of, like selenium, iron, vitamin K, vitamin A, copper, zinc, etc.  Just look for plain lutein if you are interested in this.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
The risk of retinal detachment in otherwise normal eyes is around 5 in 100,000 per year. Retinal detachment is more common in those with severe myopia (above 5–6 diopters), as their eyes are longer and the retina is stretched thin. The lifetime risk increases to 1 in 20. Generally we do not give links, but here it is mandatory because we cannot quote without reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Retinal_detachment
Hope this helps. Take care!
