Strange Large Lump

My brother has a large, solid lump on his arm that appeared hours ago, though he failed to mention it's presence until now. It may be about 2 inches in length and is distinguishable only if you look at it from a side view, there is not head or white portion of the lump, which I would suspect to be a hive, but there is hardly any redness in the center. As far as I know it does not itch, but according to him the lump was larger earlier and has since decreased in size. It is located intermediate to his wrist and elbow. It looks like his skin has swelled around what I would guess to be a bite, but he says he cannot see a "hole" where something would have bit him,

I am concerned, is it a hive and just a bad reaction or has he been bitten by something and doesn't know it? He claimed it appeared when he walked into the weight room at school.

Thank You

The lump is almost completely gone. It turned out to be a really bad reaction to a bug bite. When it had gone down in size it began to itch a little so he scratched it and of course it went back to it's original size, but now its practically gone. Thank you for your help.

doctonee medical: I meant the actual Weight Lifting room, but he claimed he had gotten the lump before working out... there must be some massive monster lurking around the room haha... yikes. However he's had a hernia once before so your point is duely noted in the future.

Thank You

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
What is weight room? Di your brother pick up some weight there? If yes, then it could be muscle injury. Apply ice pack and give anti-inflammatory and take him to a doctor.
If you mean ‘wait room’ where kids wait to be picked up, then this could be a bug bite or contact dermatitis to something he touched. Apply ice pack and give antiallergic as you are doing. Also give an anti-inflammatory to bring down the swelling. Take care!

Your very welcome, Im glad that the lump is a little smaller and he isn't complaining of pain or itching, which is very good. It should go away soon completely.

Take care

Thank you, I suspected as much. It's now the next day and the lump is a little smaller, but still pretty large. He isn't complaining of any pain or itch so I'll keep an eye on him for the rest of the day... the ice is a good idea though. We had been using benadryl which seems to have helped a little.

Thanks Again

It could be a bad reaction to a insect bite-In my opinion. But just wait a couple of hours to see if the lump is still decreasing in size. If your are still really worried you should go see a doctor. Try putting ice on the lump, it might help with the swelling.

Hope this helps
