What's wrong w/ me?

I took a mucinex DM extrastrength 2 weeks ago and ever since have had seizure like symptoms.  I get a feeling of cirulation in my head and a sensation that spreads through my whole body. Spent 5 days in the hospital and all test except the EEG were normal including blood work. I see the neuro today but last night the symptoms changed and I feel a burning sensation in my chest and my leg feels numb - like when it falls asleep - I can walk but my leg feels funny. Both of legs have also been twitching.  I sleep just fine but wake up to the circular sensation every morning.  I cannot read anything, feel week

Any one had any of these symptoms?  Also, forgot that my ears have been ringing.  I thought it was a reaction from the Topomax the doctor put me on but I have been taken off that medicine and the ringing continues.

I took the mucinex because I had an upper respirtory infection and it was affecting my ears.

Has your doctor suggested having an MRI w/ cladium to check for an Acoustic Neuroma.....this sounds like some of the symptoms and not meds at all.

EBV is a blood test. But EBV doesn't cause bone pain.  Is he doing blood work to check your vitamin levels?

Went to my GP last night.  I have such a traveling pain from my lower back to my head.  he ordered a bone scan for this morning and blood tests looking for types of arthritis and other things.

I asked about having the test to determine if I have EBV but they could not find how to order the test and told me it was very expensive.  Plus I asked if I could have fibryo and he stated that he did not want to look in that direction until other things were rules out.

Is this true?  What is the bone scan going to look for?

Does anyone know why my muscles ache but are not tender to the touch?  Is this part of the EBV virus or something else.  My neck and back have been aching since I have been in the hospital.

I don't have any caffeine in my diet - I used to before the symptoms began when I drank my hot tea.  but I have elinimated all caffeiene except when I ate some chocolate over the holidays.  I have started taking olive leaf extract and woke to horrible shriving and quirving which lasted over an hour.  Does anyone know if this is the olive leak working on the virus or is this just another symptom.

I am beggingin to wonder if I have EPV or may it is something else?

Chocolate also has caffeine in it -  do you notice a worsening of symptoms whenever you have _anything_ with caffeine?

I did notice that I ate some chocolate and it seems to bring on the symptoms.  I am beginning to boost my immune system and taking vitamin D.

thanks for your help!

Hi bucks1 - I'm sorry, I didn't have this tracked, so I've missed many of your posts!

EBV can take a long long time to clear up. Especially if you are immunocompromised :(  While EBV is a virus and is not "genetic", there ARE genetic reasons for being immuno-compromised.  Continue working with your doctor (PLEASE) and make sure you're tracking all your symptoms.

Have you noticed anything that makes it worse?

I still cannot sleep on my side or the waves chills or feeling of discomfort begin.  I still get waves of chills all day long.

Is this still EBV?

Starting taking D vitamins and an olive leaf extract to help boost my immune system?

Am I ever going to feel normal again?

Well, I have been off the meds for EPV for a week and symptoms have all come back. Feeling like I did when I was admitted to the hospital.  I am ice cold - chills run down my arms, chest feels tight and burns like indigestion.  I tingle and my ears have a terrible ringing.

Weird but my sister and my aunt are now experiencing similiar symptoms.  I have not been around them since Thanksgiving.  My sister went to the ER with chest pains, thought she was having a heart attack but her EKG was fine.  They are going to do a stress test just to be sure its not her heart.  My aunt also had similiar chest pains but did not go to the ER.

Is EPV genetic? My mother had MS -

Any help is appreciated.

Hi, thanks again for all of your help w/ my situation. I have been having severe back pain and went back to my GP last night.  Read off a list of items that might be causing my symptoms and I mentionedEPV and he wanted to know if I had any cold sores.(he never asked me this question while I was in the hospital)  I explained that I did not have any actual sores in the last 2 months but felt like I was getting one.  He now has me on meds for this and neuralgia.

I am crossing my fingers that we finally figured our my mystery.

Thanks again!

Did you see your physician again?  Are you going to the CC for further evaluation?

What medications are you taking now?

Has a viral cause been ruled out?  Viral labs?

Thanks so much for your comments,   I will have this checked out.

My leg is still numb (or feels like it is asleep) I can't sleep on my side or my back just kills me and I can't focus to read or the circular/dizziness feeling starts.

I went for  a ride today and feeling of verigo but it never develped into the severe espisode that sent me to the ER.

I agree witn Londres70 - you need a different neurologist.  No doctor should ever dismiss your concerns with those types of comments.

My first thoughts were - MS, seizure, or infection.

Tinnitus (rining in the ears), disorientation/dizziness, and inability to focus enough to readare often found together.  And that can simply be an inner ear infection.... If you took mucinex, and had a lung infection it may have spread.  Although, the blood work should have had altered Blood Counts if that was the case.

Being stressed about it all can and will exacerbate your symptoms.

HMMM - did they test you for Epstein Barr?  I felt REALLY similar to what you described for nearly 6 weeks... turned out it was reactived Epstein Barr.  EPV also can lead to Mono - which has respiratory involvment.  Go back to your PCP and ask him to do bloodwork for EBV and Mono.  They should be able to tell if you had a reactivation sometime in the last few weeks too.

Dump this Neuro and get to CC for more investigation.  In my opinion, this is related to the Mucinex DM.  I have read other people have experienced the same situation such as yourself.

"Nobody has a completely normal EEG" statement is COMPLETELY ignorant.  Get rid of this "so called" Neurologist.

I don't drink, smoke, have a sleep problem or stress in my life.  No diabetes, or ms, Per the neuro my EEG was normal - he told me no one has a completely normal EEG.

I had a hysterectomy 10 years ago.

The neuro told me I have 3 choices:  suck it up and live w/ this, tranquilizers, or Cleveland Clinic.

What should I do?

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
It is unlikely to be due to the drug as one week has passed. Tremors and the feelins you have are often associated with drugs (unlikely in your case), alcohol, smoking, lack of sleep, poor sleep patterns, stress and fatigue. They can be seen in peripheral neuropathies of diabetes, in hyperthyroidism, parasomnia, multiple sclerosis, TIAs or transient ischemic attacks or mini strokes, hypoglycemia, disorders of calcium metabolism, hyperparathyroidism etc. Certain epilepsies too could be the cause (abnormal EEG should be followed up).
Abnormal EEG is seen in tumors of the brain, sleep disorders, epilepsies, inflammation of brain, migraines, head injury, alcohol abuse, attention problems etc. Hence and if need be a MRI of brain will need to be done along with sleep studies. But, yes, it can be a seizure. With ringing in ear, it can also be atypical migraine which can cause other non specific symptoms in the body as you feel along with headache. Menopause could also be a cause and hence consult a gynecologist and get serum FSH, LH, estrogen and progesterone done. If there is a hormonal imbalance, correcting it with hormone replacement therapy will help take care of your symptoms. Tinnitus can also be stress related and so also other symptoms. All these can form a part of anxiety and stress disorder. Discuss these possibilities with your doctor.  A comprehensive investigation is required keeping all the points in mind. Hope this helps. Take care!
