I am wondering since all ingested vit D has to be processed by the liver, has
anyone had poblems with high dose D and the liver? It was pointed out to me that
it could be a concern? I am disabled from deficiency and need high doses...

Sorry to hear you were on such a roller coaster. I hope your lab values stabilize/improve it sounds as though you're moving in the right direction. My D levels have improved on 4400 IUs so perhaps if you have to you can go as low as 4000 IUs and still achieve therapeutic levels of D. I have problems maintaining therapeutic levels, probably due to absorption issues. Yeah, I think it's a good idea for all of us to be monitored periodically, every 3 months to track our D levels and adjust dosage as necessary.

I have never had any problems with elevated liver enzymes (lab that shows if there is liver issues), but I have had some kidney problems that MAY be associated with the high doses of Vitamin D (50,000iu D2).  I had to be on the high dose for over  a year.  The problem showed up started shortly after that with lots of protein in the urine.  The doctor's are not sure if it is my diabetes or the Vitamin D2.  They did finally consent to me switching to the OTC D3 after I showed them some of the comments I had found here.  My VDD numbers actually dropped with the switch (2000iu) but so did my protein. (kidney lab improved).  They have moved me up to 5000iu D3 and I am hoping for better VDD numbers and continued better kidney numbers.  My tests will be sometime this October.

I experienced severe intolerance to megadoses of Vitamin D. None of my labs -- liver or kidney function were off, however. I was deficient at 20 ng/mL D. I brought my levels up gradually taking 4400 IUs D3 in gel cap form. At my last blood test my D level was at 49. Good luck this forum is very supportive and I'm sure you'll find the dosage that works for you.

Hi,

My first comment is I am not a dr so ultimately, concerns should be addressed there.  I know there are some people who's body doesn't do well with the 50,000 pill once a week.  I however am doing fine.  I took my second dose Monday. I still have all my symptoms related to VDD but none related to my body not liking the high dose of vit d.  This is a disabling thing, if you read through the blog/forum you know you are not alone. My recommendation is which ever way you do it (again not a dr so can't help on which way you go), get on a regimen asap because the sooner you start the sooner you will feel better.

Good luck and keep us posted.
