D hits 49; symptoms resolve

My vitamin D levels have hit 49 ng/ml, an all time high for me, and my symptoms are much improved; I'm feeling like myself again. I've decided to act as my own doctor with the help of this forum. I've refused to lower my dose from 4400 IUs per day (the highest amount I can tolerate) to 2000-3000 IUs. The last time I hit 41 and felt much better my levels dropped even though I continued to take 4400 IUs. I plan to keep taking 4400 IUs until my vitamin D level hits 60-70 IUs then I might lower it to 3000 IUs daily. I'm also having my levels monitored every 3 months. What do you think? Does this sound like a plan? I want to get off the roller coaster of fluctuating vitamin D levels and stay at an optimal level which for me is greater than 40.

Worsening of gait problems, heart palpitations, jitteriness, etc, the highest dose of D3 I can tolerate is 4400 IUs and I had to work up to that gradually.

yes..wonder if your tolerance might grow over time? What symptoms did  the D cause that showed the imtolerance?

Oh I'm certain once "testing" reveals D3 does something some pharma company will figure out a way to market it at great cost and the government will step in to "regulate" it. Meanwhile, we'll just have to keep taking our D3 gel caps, reasonably priced, while we can. I know I can't believe these docs go on about D toxicity given the other stuff they prescribe. All I know is that as soon as my D level goes under 38 I feel terrible and experience symptoms trying to raise it so I'm going to be regularly monitored and stay on a tolerable but high dose.

yes I take 10000 D3...I have seen 50k d3 online....I'm tempted depending on test results..Personally anything in prescription form, even vits, I stay away from...I fully expect that soon Gov. will try to put a stop to or regulate the h out of availability of D. Bad enough that we've been led to believe, as my docs all warned " IT'S TOXIC'...yadda yadda...

It sounds as if you should keep on with what you're doing, adjusting your dose based on your D levels. I had problems with the 50 k, lots of side effects. It's D2 which your body must convert to D3. I'm assuming you're currently taking your 10 K as D3 in gel cap form best taken with a fat (meal) for optimum absorption. In other words, what you're probably taking is better than the prescription 50 k...

I took it into my own hands as well...diagnosed myself and started with 5k/day and after 3 days and alot of research, upped it to 10k..so it's been since july 27 till today...my hands and feet have 'unclenched' and foot swelling drastically better...pain has been very severe....I'm tempted to order the 50 k but will wait til I test...I have no faith in mainstream medicine whatsoever.

My experience exactly you must insist on the test and then insist upon periodic monitoring to keep checking your levels. You won't have a baseline but, if you're D is really low, the 6 weeks of supplementing (I don't know the dose of D you're taking) might push you up a bit but probably not resolve the deficiency completely. Good Luck.

I haven't been 'officially' diagnosed yet...going for blood test tmrw...spent the last 8 yrs in w/chair b/cause of dizzyness and falls, osteoporosis, severe bone, muscle and joint pain , vision etc. D deficiency runs rampant in my family...Drs don't bother to even check if you don't demand it I guess. I'm wondering if the 6 wks of supplimenting will affect the test result Thanks for post..glad you're doing better!

The first time I hit 40 it took me 6 months. I could not tolerate high doses and had to get there at 4400 IUs per day so you should get there faster at 10k/day. My levels plummeted down to 28 in the spring and it's taken me about 4 months to go from 28 to 49 -- I tried to take 5400 IUs per day for a month but couldn't tolerate it and went down to my usual 4400 IUs daily...Yeah, I definitely think it's good to be checked every 3 months. What's your goal?
