Thanks for all your responses, with all your comments saying not to worry and speaking to a few gals I know who were group B+, I have calmed down alot. I'm not sure if everything I was reading on the net was from way back in the day but it definately doesn't seem asthough I need to worry, so I'm not going to!
Thanx again!
I agree with the above. Don't need to worry - you will just be given an antibiotic.
GBS is "group b strep" bacteria. Some women are carriers of this bacteria and others are not. It is NOT a sexually transmitted disease.
It only becomes an issue when the baby descends down the birth canal. Thus women who are GBS + will be given an antibiotic during delivery.
It is not an issue with a C-Sx.
Nothing to worry about since you get treated with antibiotics.
I'm also + for GBS, my doc didn't seem to worried about it, just like the ladies above me said, they just give you meds through your IV when you first go into the hospital and are in active labor. I think its an antibiotic. I've also read that they wont do a membrane sweep with GBS+ mothers as it causes more of a chance the baby will get it. From what I've read, 98-99% of all babies born with mothers that have GBS do not get it. So its a tiny chance they will get it from us. We can still breastfeed, theres no way for them to get it through our breast milk and if you have a scheduled csection (your waters don't break before you get it) then most of the time they don't even treat you because they risk is even lower.
I wouldnt stress about it too much, I'm trying my best just to get everything ready for her to come, they'll give us antibiotics when we go into labor(and from what it sounds like not until our waters break or are broken) and they will test them and watch for symptoms before they come home from the hospital.
I have 2-3 friends that were all GBS + and none of their babies got it.
I can't wait for all of us to meet our little ones!!!
I had it with my first pregnancy but not my second. It's very common I wouldn't worry. You will just be given meds through an IV during labour and the baby will be well protected. Absolutely nothing to worry about, my daughter turned out fine!!
I personally have not experienced this.. My friend who has 2 girls now- one 15months old and the other was just born 12/1/10. She was + for both births, had both babies naturally and neither baby was passed the GBS. She was put on the IV meds to protect the babies and never had any complications.
I've not read much about it- since both of my pregnancy's I was -. I wish you all the luck in finding peace and answers with these results. Hugs!!
