Thank you. He hasn't eaten anything new or been on new antiobiotics. I actually think I was so concerned with his ears and his hearing that I was not seeing the other. My husband brought it to my attention. I thought it was normal, especially since he is a boy and boys tent to like those type of things. I thought he was doing it on prupose. I have ped appoointment for him and will have them check for lactose and see if acid reflux could be to blame also. thank you
It sounds like you’ve noticed the burping since he had his surgery last week, which makes me think it is most likely related to that.
Lactose intolerance occurs when we have a deficiency of the enzyme lactase, meaning we cannot digest lactose, a sugar in dairy products. This leads to abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea. It often runs in families. You could try eliminating dairy from your son’s diet and see if that helps. However, if his burping starting after the surgery last week I think this is less likely to be the reason.
Often burping in a young child is due to gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This happens when acidic stomach content refluxes up into to esophagus and causes heartburn, burping, and sometimes vomiting. Eating certain foods, overeating, or taking medications can trigger this.
In your son’s case, I am wondering if he has been eating new or different types of food, or if he has been taking antibiotics since the surgery? These could be the culprit leading to gas, bloating, GERD, and more burping than usual. Hopefully it will resolve once he fully recovers from his procedure, gets off antibiotics, and is on a regular diet. If it continues, I recommend you see his physician to explore other possible causes.
