inner thigh pain while sleeping or immediately after sleep

I am having inner thigh cramping while lying in bed usually close to just waking up and more likely when I first put my feet on the floor.  Usually I am still half asleep when it occurs.  It happens mostly in my left leg but does happen in the right leg.  I have had it happen in one leg immediately followed by it happening in the other leg.
It averages maybe two times a month and has been happening for about 2 years now.  Twice a month does not sound like much, but the pain is excruciating and I am always fearful that it is deep vein thrombosis or something like that.  I have a family history of circulatory problems and am in my early 50's and am overweight taking high blood pressure medication that I usually take before going to bed. This has been my routine for years before the cramps started. This pain is from my knee to my crotch and sometimes radiates on up into my abdomen.  Since it doesn't happen very often my physician disregards it.  Never happens in the day time.  Really scary folks and painful.

I too get inner leg cramps and cramps every place else. I get cramps in places no one seems to have had them. I suffer from them someplace almost every day or night. My doctor has suggested drinking tonic water for the quinine but there has got to be a better answer.

My husband and I both have these horrible cramps.  His are usually in the back of his thighs, while mine are in the inner thigh. We accidently found something that works to relieve it.  I used to sell Yves Rocher cosmetics, and they had a leg emulsion with lots of camphor and menthol and horse chestnut in it in the Spa Dynamic collection.  They changed it some, so now it is Spa Vegetal SOS Tired Legs.  One night after a big physical work day when the man was almost screaming with pain, I slapped some of that on the area and the muscle released in about 15 seconds.  We both keep this stuff by our bed at home, at the deer lease, at the farm - in the travel bag.  Neither of us can be very far from it - just in case - cause nothing else works for us and the pain is incredible!

I have been experiencing this same pain that you talk about.  My doctors also disregard it.  You have to fight to get you doctor to understand that this is an important issue and that even if there is nothing that you can do about the pain except to take ibprophen, that knowing what is going on and if it could be damaging is more important.
This sporadic pain my  left inner thigh certainly feels like it is harmful, even if it might not be.  the literature that I have found is hard to understand, but leads me to believe that it could be neuralgia, or nerve pain of one of the thigh nerves such as the obturator nerve or genitofemoral nerve, I don't know I am just listing nerves that may fall along the line that my pain runs.  From what I gather, many patient go undiagnosed and feel this same frustration from being dismissed by their doctors, too.  However, still do not have a clear understanding about whether this pain is an indicator of damage or if it is benign.

You have just discribed exactly what happens to me..it is horrifying because when it happens, it feels like it will never end.  I have to stand up and rub the area.  It also makes me feel like I am going to faint, but to lie down makes the pain worse.  The hard part is that it happens while sleeping and it jolts you out of bed so quickly.  Unlike the cramps in the calves,  it doesn't help to raise your toes.  I have realized that it has happened twice in the last couple of months and both times it was after a hard shift at work where I have sweated quite a bit.  I will try anything at this point .  I am  going to ask my doctor about taking quinine and I hope and pray that it will work.
