We had a lot of copperheads that made a nest in the railroad ties surrounding some bushes. All the dogs had been bitten at one time or another. At first we killed them, but after a while we felt very sorry about that, and 2 summers ago, when the infestation was REALLY bad, we rounded them all up and relocated them to a nice spot in the woods. Far enough away from the house that we felt they wouldn't come back.
They did help a lot with the mice we had. And the black snakes miss the copperheads. They always got along--didn't let their differences in color get in the way.
I'm glad you stopped killing them.......In reality "we are invading their turf" therefore, they should be respected. I'm glad I don't have snakes.........Oiy~~Nauty
I'm also glad you stopped killing the snakes. The relocation sounds like a better thing to do. I like that last line about them getting along with another species of snake. Interesting. Okay, warning, funny story: I'm not frightened by creepy-crawlies... I was somewhere maybe age 9 or 10. I caught a brown tree snake. It was the tamest snake I have ever seen... I didn't know how to handle it, so I held it by the tail. It just stayed very still. I wanted a pet snake so I took it home with me. My mom opened the door. Dangling it by the tail I asked, "Can we keep him?" She got all panicked and screamed for me to drop it. I did as told; dropped the snake right in front of her. She screamed, "Not right there!" I looked at her puzzled. After all, I did as I was told. Why was that a problem? After some effort I captured the snake and carried it back out to the field I found it. I let it go, my mom felt relieved and that's the end.
Oh my god! These things scare the s**t out of me. I cannot believe you would dare to move them. I once saw a snake on a hike and I cried...yep, just started bawling out there on the trail. Other hikers passed by and asked if we were okay. I think they thought I got in a fight with the boyfriend, but it was all because of a snake.
