Dear Wildflower,
If you have hurt your back 3 years ago and you are still in pain, it has not been properly addressed.  Medicating your pain with narcotics does not treat the physical cause of that pain.  Have you gone to physical therapy? Have you seen an orthopedic surgeon?  If you have, did you follow their advice?
Taking narcotic medications for a prolonged period of time will certainly make you physically dependent to them, which will eventually lead to addiction.  Do you experience any withdrawal symptoms when you run out of your medications for a day or two?
I would strongly suggest talking to your doctor about referring you to a pain specialist who can see if you are a candidate for an epidural steroid injection or some other appropriate pain block.  They may suggest other non-narcotic ways of managing your pain.
You need to deal with the cause of your pain instead of covering it up with narcotics.  Addiction is a difficult disease, which you do not want to acquire.
Good luck, my friend
