First....He MUST recognise he has a problem & he must want to stop drinking.
He will need to deal with the physical and/or psychological dependency, he may need professional medical help with detox and dealing with some of the psychological issues around his addiction....
He needs to deal with his behavioral patterns witch Alcoholics develop around drinking like cutting out people he may drink with, stay away from bars etc....
