Asthma examination

Is it normal for the doctor to place a stethoscope in so many places on my back and ask for deep breaths every time as I find this very hard going sometimes

after having asthma all my life, i find that this is actually quite common. the doctor is checking specific locations in which your lungs collect air to check for inflamed air passages and wheezing, and also for fluid in the lungs(which can be extremely serious).

It sounds as if you have a very conscientious physician. Consider yourself lucky. Unfortunately it is not normal, because some practicing physicians obtain degrees by sending in cereal boxtops. A proper examination requires ausculation anterior and posterior, four quadrants, and sometimes in several places.
