Sudden Hives

I'm a 27 year old female that has suffered from asthma for 25 years.  About three days ago, I returned to NYC from the Carribean.  I was ok Saturday (the day I returned) and Sunday.  But Monday monring, on my way to work, my body began itching.  By the time I got to work my hands were full of hives and so were my legs.  The doctor gave me some pills and a shot.  This morning, same scenario.  Once again on my way to work, itchy legs and arms.  By the time I arrived to work I had hives.  I took allegra 180mg, the hives left after a while but then my hands got swollen.  The allergist called in a new prescription which I've started today, it's called methylpredisolone.  I would really like to know why I'm suddenly breaking out in hives.  I'm still waiting for the blood test results.  Any ideas?

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Understand your predicament. Conjunctivitis, hives, chronic diarrhea and Asthma are the spectrum of different allergic responses based on the organ affected. The way in which a body responds to allergens varies from time to time, it shows a waxing and waning phenomenon. The high IgG levels are a definite indication of this. You could consult an allergist and try immunotherapy, it could help to desensitize you.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.

I had the hives for a few days only.  But ended up with conjunctivitis in mid Feb, chronic diahrea in mid march along with asthma.  April had been difficult with asthma, environmental allergies and food allergies.  Ige serum went from 1370 in Feb to 1554 now in April.  I don't know what to think anymore.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

It could be Hives, which  develop in response to an allergic reaction, by the release of histamine. The allergen can be medications, food, extremes of temperature, exercise and viral infections to name a few. Since you developed the outbreak after a vacation, the most likely cause would be Environmental triggers. So, therapy lies in avoiding the triggering factors and anti-histamines. If severe then steroids may be given.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
