HELP!! is my doctor tapering me too fast off xanax??

hi all!! Well, I've been on xanax for 8 months. the first 6 months only .25-.5mgs a night, the last 2 months I've taken 2mgs a day. the doctor is tapering me off by .5mg a week for 3 weeks. Is this too fast? Am I going to be ok? I'm at 1.5mgs now and after 3 days of it, I feel...ok I guess, not sleeping too good. can't imagine what its going to be like at ZERO three weeks from now....help... anyone done it this fast and felt ok???

thank you! I feel like I'm having a bad acid trip almost.. things are blurry and bright and a little scary, but I'm trying to hang in there. good to no theres no danger in this, except that of my sanity of course. I wish you the best as well!!

In theory, no, this isn't too fast of a taper. The dosage you're on will not cause seizure even if you quit cold turkey (which you're clearly not) so there is no danger at the taper. I'm still tapering off my Xanax to get completely, but my original drop in dose was 1.5mg total at one time. That was pretty hellish, and I did experience alot of withdrawal symptoms. I'm still at .5mg, having tapered off another .5mg since that original drop.

That said, around days 5-7, your body will finally stop sulking and kicking its feet at you withdrawing. It depends on your addiction level and how you handle it because it's unique to everyone, but that's a loose and fast estimation and proved to be true in my case as well. Days 3-4 were the hardest for me - like my body finally realized I had no intention of going back on the higher dosage and it was trying to screw me up the entire way to convince me I needed it.

So, in a shorter answer, what your doctor seems to be doing is having you taper down the minute your body stops hitting you so hard with possible withdrawal from the previous taper. It will not be easy, depending on your personal strength and willpower as well as reactions to medicines, but it's a fairly safe taper down. You just won't have much of an actual rest before you make a clean break.

All the luck!

I wish that I could help you!  I just started on Xanax on Thursday and am extremly nervous taht my doc is going to taper me too quickly when the time comes too!  This med is so addicting!  What I do know is that if you start to feel any different or your symptoms start to return you call your doc immediately and let him/her know!  That way he/she can slow down!  It will all be ok!  If you start freaking out now it will just make it worse for you!
