You're not even on a therapeutic dose yet. If you're going to try medication, try it -- buy into it. If you're not going to try it, don't and find an alternative.
I am also a new user on Lexapro and I can honestly say you need to give it more time... My Dr. gave me ambien for sleep and xanex as needed and that helps alot! I started on 5mg on April 16th and have just upped it to 20mg two days ago!! I still have bad days but for the most part after week 3 I felt so much better!! It did make me tired for about the first 4 weeks or so!!
Typically, it can take 6-8 weeks before one can accurately assess a medication's effectiveness. You started on a VERY low dose, which may increase your adjustment period. My advice to you is to just go with the flow, try to stop worrying about the medication, and get busy with life.
I remember you being one who was anxious about meds, right? That's an even better reason to try to not focus on the med aspect too much. Just give this an ample amount of time, realistically, for you and your situation, that would be probably 2-3 months (maybe even more).
As for tapering off, you're getting ahead of yourself. If the time comes where you decide Lexapro isn't for you, you can cross that bridge. You may do very well. You're already past the point where one would expect to see any severe reaction, so that's good.
Are you in therapy? That's a vital part of treatment. Medications don't "cure", they only treat the symptoms, make anxiety more tolerable...so you can work on addressing the anxiety with a therapist.
Hang in there.
Give it more time. You are on a low dose and your body is adjusting. Lexapro is a good drug with few side effects. It worked for me for 8 years. Don't be too quick to give up. Good luck and peace to you. B
