General Health

My back and spine doctor recently retired, He prescribed be oxycodone along with therapy for back problems, herinated disc, bulging discs, si joint deteriotion,;etc,  the next doctor I went to took me off of the oxycondone within 3 days, I feel sick, get migranes all the time. Isn't this the wrong way to detox someone who has been on oxycondone for at least 3 years?  I can not even do my therapy  now because I am in so much pain!!!

I agree 100% with nursegirl!  Even moderate to small doses of an opioid taken daily for three years needs to be tapered off gradually.  Otherwise you go through the withdrawal process - which actually INTENSIFIES your pain!   You really do need to talk to your new doctor.  If he/she is not willing to work with you to 1) taper off the oxycodone and 2) find a pain management regime that WORKS for you, then you should find a NEW doctor.  Perhaps your old doctor could make a recommendation for you?

One other thing:
There is a big difference between someone who is ADDICTED and someone who has a PHYSICAL DEPENDENCE to a necessary medication.  There are some doctors out there who are not open to exploring that difference with each and every patient, as addiction versus dependence varies from patient to patient.  Pain management clinics are better equipped to help make that determination - is there one in your area that you could go to?

Yes, oxycodone needs to be slowly tapered to prevent withdrawal.  If this new doctor doesn't know this, or isn't willing to do that, find a new one.

How much oxycodone were you taking, and how frequently?
